Redhawk Football Wins Brown County Brawl
By Justin Fluke

There was a lot of hype that lead to the first varsity football game between Hiawatha and Horton since 1978. The Chargers and Redhawks, seperated by only 12 miles in Brown County, didn't dissapoint early as the teams provided plenty of fireworks that resulted in a 14-14 tie after just 12 minutes of football. However, Hiawatha scored the next five touchdowns and coasted to a 55-20 win in the Class 3A District opener.

After forcing a three and out to begin the game, Hiawatha scored on their first play from scrimmage as Denzel Chilcoat caught a short pass from Brad Chilcoat, then broke two tackles and out-ran the Charger defense for an 85 yard touchdown.  Yet, the ensuing kickoff was returned by Horton's Dakota Bayles 80 yards for a tying score, it was his second kick return to pay-dirt in the last two games.  After the two teams traded possessions, Hiawatha made their only other mistake in the game as Conner Bigham fumbled a punt return as the Chargers recovered at the 19 yard line.  Two plays later, Josh Allen crossed the goal-line to give Horton a 14-7 lead with 5:00 to play in the opening quarter.  For the Chargers, not much else went right the rest of the night.  HIawatha would tie the game late in the first period on a 25 yard pass from Brad Chilcoat to Quentin Overdick, and the Hawks added short rushing touchdowns by Parker Hasenkamp and Denzel Chilcoat to go up 27-14.  Hiawatha got two more offensive drives in the final three minutes, as the Chilcoat brothers hooked up again on a 71 yard touchdown pass, and the home team also missed a field goal to end the half with a 35-14 lead.  Hiawatha outgained Horton 402 yards to just 42 in the half and had 17 first downs to only 3 for the visitors.

As the teams re-entered the field after halftime, lightning was spotted and a 90 minute delay followed. Then, the Redhawks continued to dominate as Hasenkamp finished off a 24 carry for 138 yard night with two more rushing scores in the third quarter and Josh Hinkle completed the scoring with a two-yard plunge for the final margin.  Horton's only second half score came on a 38 yard halfback pass from Jordan Matthias to Spencer DeLosSantos which made the score 49-20 late in the third.

Hiawatha racked up 607 total yards while Horton finished with 115.  Brad Chilcoat was 7 of 16 for 255 yards and 176 of those were to Denzel Chilcoat as the brothers celebrated senior night in style while each were involved in a trio of touchdowns.  They shared Citizen State Bank and Trust Company of Hiawatha "Players to Bank On" honors with Hasenkamp, who had a hat-trick scoring himself and also was the top Redhawk tackler.

Horton drops to 2-4 and host Sabetha next week in a must-win for the Chargers district hopes.  Hiawatha is now 5-2 on the season and plays former Coach Scot Koranda at Riverside (6-1).   The Cyclones will be desperate for a win after suffering their first season loss at Sabetha 7-0 on Friday in another weather delayed week seven game.
