Jackson Heights Takes Two From Jeff North
By Jonny Kane

The Jackson Heights Cobras went on the road to Winchester on Tuesday night in Northeast Kansas League action and after two fantastic games they came away with a seep over JCN with the girls coming away with a 47-33 win and the guys a 59-57 overtime win.

Girls: Jackson Heights 47, Jefferson County North 33

The JCN Lady Chargers desperately needed a win after dropping four straight and they played like it in the first quarter of the ballgame as they got out to a quick 14-6 lead. It was the first game back for senior Lyndsey Vittitow since suffering a knee injury in the first game of the season and she came out strong scoring 8 points in the first quarter. It was then time for Jackson Heights' combination of seniors Jessica Keehn and Payton Thomas to take over in the second quarter as they came together to combine for 14 points to give the Lady Cobras a 24-19 lead heading into the halftime break.

After a strong first quarter JCN just wasn't able to get anything going from then on as Jackson Heights continued their strong play from the second quarter  pushing their lead to 10 after three. The Lady Chargers then had plenty of chances to try to make a comeback in the fourth quarter, but they just could not seem to find the bottom of the net which ultimately allowed Jackson Heights to come away with a 47-33 win.

With the loss, JCN moves to 3-5 on the season and were led in scoring by Lyndsey Vittow as she had 12 along with Jentry Seichpine who contributed with 11 points of her own. Jackson Heights was led in scoring by Jessica Keehn who had a game high 22 points to move the Lady Cobras to 4-3 on the season.

Boys: Jackson Heights 59, Jefferson County North 57 (Overtime)

The guys portion of Tuesday night's contests turned out to be one of the games of the year as it started out back and forth with the Cobras; who were fresh off their new #10 ranking in Class 2A, taking a 13-8 after the first quarter. Then JCN junior Bryce Noll decided he would take over the scoring duties for the Chargers as he scored 11 points in the second quarter to put his team in the lead 26-23 at the break.

Coming out of halftime each team exchanged blows with neither team able to gain an advantage, which gave us a tie ballgame heading into the final frame. The fourth quarter went exactly like the third with both teams going back and forth which set things up for a wild finish.

Jackson Heights was able to run the clock all the way down and call a timeout with 10 seconds left and head coach Chris Brown drew up a play to get the ball into the hands of Zane Richter who came in averaging 24.8 points per contest. Richter caught the inbound pass out of the timeout but Charger senior Austin Wolfe made one of the biggest plays of the game knocking the ball out of bounds off of Richter to give JCN the ball with 7.8 seconds left. On the ensuing play for the Chargers, Noll drove down the middle of the lane and threw up a shot that clanked off the front of the rim but Charger Shawn Lane got the rebound and was fouled with 1.8 left on the clock. The senior then went to the line for a one-and-one with a chance to give the Chargers the victory, but his free throw bounced off the back iron so we headed to overtime.

The overtime period was once again back and forth throughout with the Cobras taking a three point lead with just 6 seconds left. Jackson Heights then had a chance to ice the ballgame but Wyatt Olberding missed two free throws giving JCN one more chance. Bryce Noll then got the basketball and as he pulled up for the potential game-tying three, he was fouled and was sent to the line for three shots with just 1.5 seconds left. The three point game meant Noll needed to sink all three but his first shot was left short which allowed Jackson Heights to come away with a hard fought 59-57 win.

With the loss JCN moved to 4-4 on the season as they were led in scoring by Bryce Noll who poured in 26 points. Jackson Heights improved their record to 6-1 with the win as they continued to be led in scoring by Zane Richter as the junior finished with 18 points.
