Weather didn't just affect Friday night football but state tennis also as the 3-2-1A state tennis tournaments were postponed until Sunday and wrapped up on Monday, while Class 4A state tourney wrapped up Sunday with a delay, also.
Sabetha and Marysville sent multiple tennis players to state and a fourth and sixth place finish were the top finishes by Kanzaland area performers. In the singles competition it was two individuals from the Kanzaland area in Class 3-2-1A competing as Sabetha Bluejay, Jen Stallbaumer and Marysville Bulldog, Dani Schwarz hit the court.
Stallbaumer went 1-2 on the day, winning her first round match but bowing out in her next two matches. Highlight the individual performances from the Kanzaland area was Schwarz of Marysville as she placed fourth on the day. Dani earned a first round bye and then rattled off two straight wins to advance to the semifinals, were she fell in the semi's setting up a match for third place were she would fall 6-2, 6-4 to earn a fourth place finish at state in Class 3-2-1A in singles competition.
Atchison Redmen, also sent one tennis singles player to state in Class 4A, as Nikki Hare competed and went 1-2 on the day.
In the doubles competition it was two teams for both Sabetha and Marysville competing at state. Highlighting the Kanzaland area performances for the doubles competition at 3-2-1A state tennis doubles tournament was Sabetha Bluejays, Ellie Montgomery and Amy Wysong, as after winning their regional they placed sixth at state going 3-2 on the day. Their teammates Laeny Edelman and Jessica Romines, bowed out early at state going 1-2 in action.
For the Bulldogs their pair of doubles teams competed in multiple matches, as Kassie Breshears and Lauren Hawkinson finished 1-2 on the day and Ashley Bruna and Hillary Ronnebaum took home an eleventh place finish. Bruna and Ronnebaum fell in their first game and then rattled off two wins before a few losses to end the tourney in eleventh, with a 2-4 record.
