Washington County Volleyball Wins 2A title, While JCN finishes 4th
By Mike Smith

Class 2A state volleyball tournament featured two Kanzaland area teams and both finished with solid performances to their season. As the Washington County Tigers another top team in the Twin Valley League came out on top capturing the Class 2A state title, while the Jefferson County North Chargers placed fourth.

Both teams, made it out of pool play unblemished with 3-0 records. For Washington County it was expected as the number one seed at the tournament they made light work of their first two opponents dispatching them in straight sets; beating Berean Academy 25-17, 25-9 and Uniontown 25-10, 25-6. The Tigers third pool play game was slightly hard going three sets against Ell-Saline as Washington County loss the first set but responded to win the next two (20-25, 25-18, 25-17).

For the Chargers for JCN it was quite similar to that of Washington County as the Chargers won two matches in straight sets and the other in pool play in three sets. The biggest difference was the Chargers did this as the seven seed surprising some. JCN cruised past both Hill City and Skyline in straight sets (25-20, 25-19 & 26-24, 25-23). The Chargers needed three against Kiowa County as the Chargers rallied after losing set number one 25-12, JCN won the next two 25-23, 25-20.

Going 3-0 in pool play earned both JCN and Washington County spots in the Class 2A state volleyball tournament semifinals. For the Tigers they quickly got past their opponent downing Hill City in straight sets 25-17, 25-15, while for JCN it went the opposite as their opponent Ell-Saline worked their way to a straight set win over the Chargers 25-22, 25-22.

That set up rematches from earlier in the state tourney but this time with more up for grabs, as Washington County was set to take on Ell-Saline for the state title and JCN to take on Hill City for third place. In the third place game it would go three sets to decide it unlike the first time when the teams played. This time it was Hill City victorious 25-13, 15-25, 25-19 to take third and give the JCN Chargers a third place finish, ending the Chargers season with a 25-16 record.

The Tigers of Washington County who dispatched Ell-Saline in pool play in three sets only needed two in the championship beat Ell-Saline 25-12, 25-18 in straight sets to capture the Class 2A state title. Washington County capped off their stellar season with a 41-3 record on the season.
