Onaga Ends Season with 28-20 Loss to Olpe in Playoffs
By Mike Smith

Fresh off a 4-0 district title run, their first Twin Valley League win in seven years (vs. Valley Heights 28-6) and a 6-3 record, playing some of their best football the Onaga Buffalos were hosting a playoff game for the first time since 2004.

Buffalos would see a tough 7-2 Olpe Eagles team come to town and it would prove to be a tough ball game. Onaga put forth a rally in the second half but ultimately came up short falling 28-20 at home to end their season with a 6-4 record.

It was the mistakes that doomed the Buffalos as they compiled five turnovers (three interceptions and two fumbles), nine penalties and two crucial turnovers on down giving Eagles short fields. It was thought it would be a battle on the ground and for the early portion of the game it was as it was scoreless after one stanza, with the biggest play being Onaga recovery a Olpe fumble inside the five to stop the Eagles from scoring.

In the second quarter, things opened up for Olpe as they saw the penalties and three of the five Buffalo turnovers happen. Eagles sophomore quarterback, Bo Krueger went to the sky and found Brandon Baumgardner for a 41 yard touchdown and then after a turnover by Onaga, Kreuger sailed a pass to Toby Smith into the endzone for a 16 yard score, extra point good both times and Olpe took a 14-0 lead into the half.

Onaga still in the game, just need to make adjustments on their mistakes but something would happen right at the start of the second half to dig a deeper Buffalo hole. Krueger, hit a hole and brusted his way to the endzone 65 yards and Olpe lead it 21-0 just seconds into the second half.

Buffaloes needing a spark started sprinkle in the passing attack more and behind the work of sophomore runningback, Michael Bliss and arm and feet of senior quarterback, Mitchell Kufahl they moved the ball. Kufahl shot off a 49 yard run into the endzone for score number one by the Buffalos, 21-7. Bufflaoes would try and onside kick to no avail and Olpe made the Buffs pay answering with their own touchdown this time Krueger hit tailback, Mitch Argabright for an 18 yard score, 28-7.

Needing another solid scoring offensive drive the Buffaloes answered themselves with electric passes from Kufahl to his tight end Thomas Eisenbarth, then Michael Bliss took care of business and punched it in the endzone from 11 yards out, 28-14; Bliss finished the night with 74 yards rushing and a score, while surpassing the 1,000 yard mark for the season, earning him Community National Bank of Seneca and Sabetha "Player to Bank On" award. After that score the Buffaloes went to the onside kick again and this time Wyatt Cordell came up with it for Onaga. With the short field the Buffs need another score in the fourth quarter and they got it this time via the air as Kufahl tossed a 57 yard pass over the middle to his tight end, Eisenbarth who broke it up the near sideline and went to paydirt after a great block by Kyle Bliss; Eisenbarth had 85 yards on three receptions on the night. The Buffaloes missed the extra point so the score was 28-20.

Buffaloes would get a couple more opportunities but turn it over on downs, then forced Olpe to punt to get the ball back with just over a minute left. On the next play after the punt, Kufhal went to the air again and he was picked of by Olpe and that was all she wrote for the game. Kufahl finished the game 6-14 131 yards, TD pass and 3 INT's and 107 yards rushing with a score.

For the Buffaloes they end their season 6-4, but have plenty to be proud of with a district title, first TVL win in seven years and a playoff berth. Olpe with the win moves to 8-2 and will host the defending 2-1A champs in Centralia/Wetmore next Friday night.
