It was a five hour bus trip for the Falcons from the top of the state to the bottom to take on a surprise Caldwell team in the second round of the playoffs action of 8-Man Division II.
The game started off sluggishly with only a 6-0 score after the first quarter, B&B scoring on a fumble recovery by Brandon Bergman who took a Dustin Deters fumble the remaining 33 yards to the endzone for the score; two-point conversion unsuccessful. Although Caldwell was with a single score after one score their offense couldn't get things moving as they coughed the ball up twice with just their first five plays in the game.
B&B would get all the momentum heavily in their favor in the second quarter when things started to fully swing the top ranked Falcons way. Falcons poured on 24 points in the second quarter to lead 30-0 at the half. Junior quarterback, Dustin Rottinghaus tossed two scores in the second one to Bergman for 18 yards and the other to Tyler Deters for 21 yards, while Rottinghaus added a rushing score sandwiched in between those TD passes.
Rottinghaus, was close to 1,000 yards passing coming into the game and passed that mark in the first half of action and finishing the game with 201 yards passing on 11-18 with three passes going for TD's. Tyler Deters who grabbed one TD pass from Rottinghaus in the first half nabbed another in the second half and went over the 100 yard receiving mark on four receptions (119 yards, 2 TD catches) while also grabbing an interception on defense, earning Tyler the Community National of Seneca and Sabetha "Player to Bank On" award.
The Caldwell Bluejays came out of the half threatening to score and try and get back into the game but B&B would come up with a defensive stop; later in the third quarter, Tyler Deters grabbed an interception to stop the Bluejays again. B&B added 12 more points in the third with a offensive drive that featured a gentlemen that has been quite effective running the ball this season, especially recently, as Dustin Deters registered 131 yards on 12 carries, scoring on an 11 yard TD run in the third quarter. Rottinghaus later in the quarter found Tyler Deters for their second TD connection of the day, this time for 65 yards on a post route; with a missed two-point conversion and PAT B&B lead it 42-0 after three stanza's.
B&B sent in some of the reserves and they drove down the field to end the third and on the first play of the fourth quarter, backup quarterback, Dylan Schmitz handed the ball off to Derek Mueting who punched it in from five yards out, for the game winning and ending score, 48-0.
The Falcons continued to stifle their opponent's offense only allowing 111 total yards of offense to the Bluejays, while pitching their six shutout of the season.
Falcons are now 11-0 this season and one win away from their fifth straight 8-Man Division II stat championship game, but will have a familiar foe in front of them to get to the championship game, that foe the Hanover Wildcats. They play in the regular season and B&B won 52-46 in double overtime at home over their rival but Hanover led by 16 in the fourth quarter and has been the Falcons toughest test this season. This time it will be in Baileyville again at 7:00pm on Friday. (You can hear the game on 92.1 KMZA and online here -- click here)
