Axtell Boys & Nemaha Central Girls Win Valley Heights Track Invite Titles

Five area teams continued their track and field seasons on Thursday as Valley Heights hosted four fellow Twin Valley League teams along with Nemaha Central and it proved to be a highly competitive day of action. 

The boys competition was a tight one for the team title on the day as Axtell brought home first place as a team finishing with 135 total points, edging out the host Valley Heights by five points (130) giving the Mustangs second, while Wetmore tallied 119 points to notch third. Centralia and Nemaha Central took fourth and fifth with 105 and 104 total points on the day. 

In the girls competition it was Nemaha Central laying claim to the top spot on the day finishing with 180 total points, while Centralia registered 166 points for second place and 124 points by Valley Heights was good for third. Axtell and Wetmore took fourth and fifth place as teams, respectively (102 & 10 points).

While Axtell and Nemaha Central claimed the top team spots on the day it was Centralia and Valley Heights bringing in the most top individual events on the day with 10 each between the girls and boys competitions. 

The Centralia Panthers had balance on the day with five event wins for the girls and five for the boys and Sadie Jones led the way winning two gold medals at another meet this track season as she raced to first place finishes in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. Jones posted times of 5:56.97 and 12:43.90 to take home the gold in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. Mayda Stallbaumer and Madison Lueger each also won an event as Stallbaumer notched a time of 4:26.56 to win th 800 meter run and a toss of 129'06 led Lueger to the javelin title. Lady Panthers also earned the gold in the 4x400 meter relay behind a time of 4:26.56. On the boys side of competition the Panthers won the 4x400 meter relay (3:48.61), while Trenton Flentie won the 800 meter run (2:16) and three more golds happened in the field events. Caleb Durland, Josh Hasenkamp and Dylan Boeckman each brought home a first winning the discus (106'10), javelin (162'10) and pole vault (11'06), respectively. 

The host Valley Heights Mustangs also had a strong showing on the day coming on their home track with 10 event wins. Kayla Smith again sprinted and leapt past the competition winning three events, claiming the gold in the 100 meter dash (12.96), long jump (17'00.75) and triple jump (37'06). While, Shelby Vermetten continued to toss her way to first place finishes in the shot put and discus with throws of 38'10.50 and 129'10. The lady Mustangs also won the 4x100 meter relay behind a time of 52.41. For the boys Adrian Pishny led Valley Heights pacing his way to wins in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs with times of 4:59.13 and 10:41.60, respectively. Anthony Edwards and Harrison Blaske each won an event also winning the high jump (6'00) and triple jump (41'00.50). 

Eight first place finishes led Axtell on the day and a pair of dual-gold winners paced the Eagles at the Valley Heights Invite. Both Bradie Schmitz and Caleb Heiman each won a pair of events on the day in competition. Schmitz sprinted her way to gold in the 200 and 400 meter dashes with times of 27.16 and 1:00.09, while Heiman swept the boys hurdles winning the 110 and 300 meter hurdles behind times of 16.72 and 42.84. On the girls side the lady Eagles also won the 4x800 meter relay (10:31.87), while Mariah Deters leapt to the win in the high jump (5'02). The boys also won the 4x800 meter relay (8:44.13) and Brice Koch raced to the gold in the 400 meter dash (54.05). 

Both Nemaha Central and Wetmore each had four event winners on the day. For the Thunder three of the four individual event wins came by Rachael Baumgartner who won the 100 and 300 meter hurdles with times of 17.05 and 49.30 and vaulted to the win in the pole vault (10'03). Winston Meyer brought home the other gold for Nemaha Central tossing his way to the win in the shot put (50'02). 

Wetmore had four event wins in the boy’s competition as both Steve Brooks and Curtis Bloom each sprinted to wins, winning the 100 and 200 meter dashes with times of 11.80 and 24.23, respectively. The Cardinal boys also won the 4x100 meter relay (47.17) and Kyler Vance with a leap of 19'06 won the long jump.
