Strong Second Half Give Troy Trojans First Round Playoff Win Over Valley Heights

In rematch of week one of the season and the opening round of the 2-1A playoffs form 2014 the Troy Trojans hosted Valley Heights Friday night to open the 2016 2-1A football playoffs. After a tight first half the Trojans used a strong second half and three Valley Heights turnovers to earn the 42-16 victory. 

Troy started the game strong and led by the the rushing attack gave Valley Heights a bit of their own medicine early by rushing their way down the field and into the endzone with Kortin Blevins finishing the drive on a one-yard touchdown run and with the PAT made it 7-0 with 9:48 left in first quarter. Valley Heights had an answer with a methodical 14-play drive converting on all four third downs and ending the drive on a two-yard Hunter Stevenson touchdown run and with a Logan Woodyard to Bryan Yungeberg pass on the two-point conversion the Mustangs took an 8-7 lead with 2:36 left in the first quarter. Troy regained the lead shortly into the second quarter as Cuttar Huss punched in his first rushing touchdown of the year on a five-yard run and made it 13-8 after a missed two-point conversion. Both teams had opportunities that fell through in the rest of the first half and Troy went into halftime up just 13-8. 

Unlike the first half which was balanced between both teams the second half belong to Troy as the Trojans turned over Valley Heights three times on fumbles and outgained them 232 to 83 total yards in the second half. Trojans extended the lead with 2:11 left in the third on a Huss six-yard run on a reserve and the two-point conversion made it 21-8. Troy capitalized on the Valley Heights turnovers in the fourth quarter getting a Reid Greaser three-yard touchdown run and Greaser 35-yard touchdown pass to Huss making it 34-8. The Mustangs got their second score with 5:23 left in the game on a one-yard Woodyard touchdown run on a 13-play drive and with the two-point conversion made it 34-16. The Trojans capped the scoring with a five-yard Alex Martinez touchdown run to finish the game 42-16. 

Valley Heights caps the season 7-3 and finishes with their best record since 2009. Stevenson led the Mustang attack with 108 yards on 21 carries with a touchdown and earned Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" on KMZA. Jordan Yungeberg added 98 yards on 19 carries on the night. 

Troy for the fourth straight year won a first round playoff game and in the process improved to 10-0 on the season. The Trojans totaled 401 yards of offense with Martinez rushing for 123 yards on 16 carries with a touchdown to earn Citizens State Bank and Trust Company "Player to Bank On" on KNZA. Greaser added a 15-22 night for 163 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for another score and Huss chipped in 53 yards on six carries with two scores and caught nine passes for 91 yards with a touchdown. Wil Smith earned Dension State Bank "Lineman of the game" as he was strong on the defensive line and made several key blocks along the offensive line opening up running lanes. 

The Trojans with the win will host Lyndon in the Sectional round of the playoffs on Friday, November 11th, as Lyndon beat Oswego 56-12 in their first round 2-1A playoff game.
