After opening the basketball season earlier in the week as part of the St. Mary's Duals the Onaga Buffaloes continued the action at St. Mary's against the host Bears on Thursday night and suffered a pair of tough losses. The lady Buffaloes fell down early in the contest with turnovers hurting the team as St. Mary's won 66-36, while the boys game was a single digit most of the contest until about 3:40 left when St. Mary's pushed it to double figures and finished the game strong for the 59-39 win.

Onaga started the girls game with the first bucket but when St. Mary's broke out the full court pressure defense on the Buffaloes it generated multiple Onaga turnovers which led to buckets for the Bears and St. Mary's established a big lead 20-6 by the end of the first quarter. Turnovers continued to be an issue for Onaga in the game as they fell down 37-19 at intermission and ultimately fell to St. Mary's 66-36.

In the loss Onaga was led by Shay Duer who recorded 13 points and earned Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA, while Alexis Van Donge added 8 points but the Buffaloes fell to 0-2 on the season. St. Mary's was led by a quartet in double figures with Madison Schoemann netting 16 points and three other gals tallied 11 points each as the improved to 2-0.

Early hot shooting from three-point range by St. Mary's in the boys contest gave them an early lead against Onaga but the Buffaloes were active on the glass early and got some second chance opportunities to stay close down just 14-13 after the first quarter. The lead grew in the second quarter to 11 points for the Bears a couple different times but Onaga answered again and cut the deficit to five by halftime, 31-26. St. Mary's who hit 7-14 three-pointers in the first half cooled off in the second half and Onaga closed to within two points multiple times but never could take the lead as St. Mary's held them at bay and finished out the game with a 18-5 fourth quarter extending the lead back to double figures just under four minutes left in the contest and going on to win 59-39.

St. Mary's finished the contest 9-25 from three-point range and hit 14-16 free throws in the win to move to 2-0 with Jeffery Kleinsmith leading them on the night with 18 points.

Onaga in the loss was led by Tyler Herman and Logan Marten who each netted 10 points, while Tanner Marten chipped in eight points as the Buffaloes fell to 1-1 on the year. Herman picked up Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA with his 10 point night and active play at the rim. Buffaloes did struggle from the free throw line going 4-13.

The Buffaloes will wrap up the St. Mary's Duals early season tournament action on Friday afternoon in St. Mary's taking on Mission Valley.
