Area Wrestling Teams In Action at Onaga Invitational

Six area schools competed on the mats as part of the Onaga wrestling Invitational over the weekend with multiple top notch individual performances. 

The Riverside Cyclones led the area performances overall as a team taking fourth place just 3.5 points away from third place which was captured by Republic County, while Bonner Springs and Silver Lake took first and second, respectively. Oskaloosa and Doniphan West finished eighth and ninth as teams, while the host Onaga finished 11th and Jeff West and Hiawatha 13th and 14th. 

Five Top three finishes on the day led the Riverside Cyclones while all seven of their wrestlers in action earned at least one win on the day. A 4-0 performance by Scot Resler at 145lbs paced the Cyclones on the mats has he recorded two pinfall wins (1:50 and 2:46), along with a technical fall win and a 4-2 decision victory coming in the Championship bout. Beau Horn (126lbs) and Kinstin Juhl (152lbs) each notched second place finishes after going 4-1 on the mats. Horn recorded his four wins in multiple ways registering a 4-2 sudden victory, a 16-1 technical fall win, a pinfall victory in 10 seconds and a 9-0 major decision win, while for Juhl all four wins came via pinfall in 1:03, 1:29, 1:11 and 1:11. Third place finishes were earned by Derrick Karn (132lbs) and Jacob MacKnight (182lbs) for Riverside as Karn posted a 4-1 day on the mats and MacKnight went 2-2 in matches wrestled.

Oskaloosa was led by four Top four performances on the mats at Onaga with Jared Miller leading the charge going 4-0 to take first place at 182lbs. Miller snagged a pair of wins by pin in 3:04 and 3:25, while also winning major decision 12-2 and then claiming a 2-1 decision win in the Championship bout against a wrestler from Republic County. A 2-2 day on the mats earned Chris King third place at 220lbs, while Colby Peck (170lbs) and Vincent Dick (285lbs) each posted fourth place finishes for the Bears. 

The host Onaga Buffaloes had their best performance on their home mats come from Quentin Lara who went 5-0 at 195lbs and took first place. Lara dispatched all his opponents on the day by pinfall recording wins in 1:52, 1:31, 1:06, 1:38 and 1:44 to give him a first place finish on the day. 

Doniphan West Mustangs had two grapplers post second place finishes on the day as Houston Idol (106lbs) and Zeb Speer (160lbs) each took second place. Idol recorded a 3-1 day on the mats with two pinfall wins in 5:33 and 5:47 and also a 1-0 decision victory. For Speer it was also a 3-1 day on the mats registering his three wins all by pin in 1:16, :39 and :27. 

Maur Hill-Mount Academy had a third place finisher on the day in Blake Mispagel who posted a 3-2 day on the mats at 138lbs. 

Jeff West and Hiawatha each had a few varsity grapplers in action, while Marysville junior varsity was also in action.
