Both offenses struggles, especially early, but after a a try to Hillary Krebs of Sabetha to tie the score at nine to start the second quarter, Jeff West went on a 9-0 over the final seven minutes of the half and never looked back in getting the road win. The Citizens State Bankd and Trust Company of Hiawatha "Player to Bank On" was Faith Becker, who scored 14 points, Aaliyah Negonsott added 12, while the Tiger defense held Sabetha to only 13 total points in the first three periods in their fourth consecutive win (4-1). The Lady Jays, now 4-2 on the season, battled through more than 20 turnovers and was led by Skylar McAfee and Hillary Krebs with six points each.
BOYS = Sabetha 50, Jeff West 45
After six early lead changes, the Tiger boys took a 14-11 advantage into the second quarter as Hunter Dean knocked down a three-pointer at the buzzer. Yet, Sabetha took control with a 22-21 lead at the intermission and never relinquished the lead. The Bluejays used a 10-4 third quarter to stretch the margin and led 40-32 with only 1:16 to play. However, Jeff West hit a flurry of shots, including three treys from Nick Malloy to close the gap. Sabetha won the game at the free-throw line making 15 of 16 foul shots in the fourth quarter to protect the lead.
Eric Renyer scored 15 points while Christian Meyer had 14, including six important free throws and a couple one-and-ones down the stretch to earn "Player to Bank On" honors from the Citizens State Bank and Trust Company in Hiawatha. Keegan Cox also went 4-4 at the stripe in teh last 40 seconds to finish with six points and Kyle Grimm chipped in 10 as the Jays improved to 3-3 on the season and 3-2 in Big 7 play. Jeff West got 11 points from Isaiah Schmidt and Malloy finished with 13 of his 22 in the final two minutes before the Tigers fell to 2-3 overall and 2-2 in League competition. Malloy has scored at least 20 points in all five Jeff West games this season, but only made one shot in both the second and third quarters as the Tigers were held to a total of just 11 total points in the middle two periods of the game.
