High School Wrestling Round-Up - Royal Valley, Oskaloosa & Atchison Compete at Different Tournaments

Several area teams were in action for the first time out of the holiday break in several different wrestling tournaments on the first Saturday of 2017. Royal Valley competed at the Topeka-Seaman Duals, while Atchison was in action at the Bonner Springs Invite and Oskaloosa hit the mats at the Burlington Invite. 

Royal Valley Competes at Topeka-Seaman Duals

Royal Valley Panthers grapplers opened the 2017 portion of the wrestling season competing against several bigger schools at the Topeka-Seaman Duals and finished sixth out of six teams in action. 

The Panthers fell to the host Seaman in the first dual of the day 66-18 and fell in their other four bouts also. Blue Valley topped Royal Valley 33-19 in the close dual of the day for the Panthers, while Hays beat Royal Valley 66-9, KC Turner won 39-13 over the Panthers and Lansing beat Royal Valley 51-22. 

Jacob Box led Royal Valley on the day registering four wins with three coming via pinfall competing at 220lbs, while Blake Garrison who competed mainly at 195lbs had three wins with two by pin. Both Bryce Garrison (160lbs) and Brett House (138lbs) each grabbed a pair of wins in matches wrestled and Karsen Smith (152lbs) also recorded a win for the Panthers on the day. 

The wrestling season continues for Royal Valley on Thursday, January 12th at Eudora for a triangular. 

Atchison Has Trio of Top Eight Finishers at Bonner Springs Invite

Atchison Redmen wrestlers continued their season at the Bonner Springs Invitational on Saturday and had a trio of grapplers notched Top eight finishes, while finishing 15th out of 16 teams in action. 

A 1-4 day in action at 220lbs earned Riley Smith a sixth place finish the top placer for Atchison at the Burlington Invitational. While a pair of eighth place finishes were earned by Nick Funk (285lbs) and Jayden Watkins (120lbs) each recording one win on the mats. 

Atchison wrestlers will next be in action again at the St. Mary's Invitational set for January 13th and 14th. 

Oskaloosa Grapplers Hit the Mats at Burlington Invitational

A quartet of Oskaloosa wrestlers notched Top seven finishes on the mats at the Burlington Invitational on Saturday, while the Bears placed 17th as a team out of 22 schools in action. 

A third place showing at 182lbs for Jared Miller led the Bears on the day as went 4-1 in action with a pair of decision wins and two pinfall wins, along with a win by forfeit. Vincent Dick (285lbs), Chris King (220lbs) and Lucas Hatfield (126lbs) all three placed seventh in their weight classes. Dick picked up three wins in matches wrestled all by pinfall, while King had one win and Hatfield snagged a pair of wins in matches wrestled. 

The Bears will take to the mats again later this month on January 21st at the Holton Invitational.
