In the only Northeast Kansas League games on Friday, January 13th, the Horton girls used hot three-point shooting to improve to 6-2, while the Jackson Heights boys won a low-scoring defensive battle to catch the Horton boys at 6-2 in the League standings.

GIRLS = Horton 50, Jackson Heights 32

Horton came out and made five three-point-baskets in the first quarter and jumped to a 17-5 lead on the road.  The Chargers never looked back in the route and hit a total of nine trifecata's in the contest.  Kaitlyn McAfee made five behind the arc for her 15 points while Abby Ross drained four treys for her 12 points as both shared "Player to Bank On" honors from the Citizens State Bank and Trust Company of Hiawatha.

The Lady Chargers led 27-10 at halftime and by as many as 21 points in the second half while overcoming 22 turnovers in the game.  Horton was also just one of three from the foul-line, where Jackson Heights made 13 of 23 charity tosses, but could not keep up with the Chargers outside shooting.  Abby Williams had all nine of her points at halftime. Kylie Dohl hit 8 of 10 at the stripe to post all her 10 points after intermission.  The Lady Cobras fell to 3-5 on the season.

BOYS = Jackson Heights 41, Horton 27

Horton jumped out to a 10-2 advantage in the boys game and led 16-11 at the end of one quarter.  However, the Chargers then went seven minutes without a point and could only muster three made shots the rest of the game.  The game was still tied at 20 at halftime and the Cobras only led 28-25 before running away with a 13-2 fourth period.  Besides making just one field goal in the second, third and fourth frames, Horton committed several turnovers in the second half that Jackson Heights used to score in transition and pull away for the win.

Both teams are now 6-2 on the season as Joe Winsea had nine points to pace Horton and Jackson Heights was led by Citizens State Bank and and Trust Company "Player to Bank On," Wyatt Olberding with 24.  Mason Thomas added 10 for the Cobras, who were able to get the win in their lowest scoring game of the season.  Both teams struggled offensively most of the night and made less than 50 percent at the charity stripe.

Both boys teams will play in the Thunder Classic next week in Seneca as #5 seed Jackson Heights battles Silver Lake at 5:00 PM and #2 seed Horton plays Falls City at 6:30.  All four first-round boys games Tuesday will be broadcast live on KNZA 103.9 FM.
