KBCA High School Basketball Rankings Feb. 27 - 15 Area Teams

The Kansas Basketball Coaches Association released the final rankings of the 2016-17 season for Feb. 27, and 15 area teams are once again in the top 10 of their respective classifications.

Class 2A continues to house the most teams in the rankings this week with five area teams ranked between the girls and boys. On the girl’s side of the rankings three teams continue to be in the top 10, with Valley Falls the highest area team ranked in 2A checking in at No. 6 for the second consecutive week. The Dragons finished the regular season 17-3 and co-champions of the Northeast Kansas League with Jefferson County North after a pair of wins over Horton and McLouth last week. As to the Charger girls they check in right behind the Dragons at No. 7 this week, moving up two spots after wins over Jackson Heights and Oskaloosa sitting at 18-2 on the year. Washington County saw the only drop in the 2A rankings on the girl’s side this week, checking in at No. 9 with a 16-4 record after falling to 1A-Div 1 No. 1 Centralia Tuesday before taking down Wetmore to finish up the week. The Troy boys continue to be the top ranked area team on the boy’s side of the 2A rankings moving up to No. 4 this week sitting at 18-2 after wrapping up the Twin Valley League title last week with a win over Wetmore. Jefferson County North finishes off the 2A rankings for the boys checking in at No. 9 at 17-3 after wrapping up the NEKL title outright last week with a pair of wins over Jackson Heights and Oskaloosa.

The Class 3A rankings continue to house four teams this week with three teams in the same upcoming sub-state checking at No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 on the boy’s side. Marysville has the highest ranking this week at No. 4 sitting at 16-4 on the season after finishing off the regular season with a win over Wamego Tuesday. The Bulldogs are followed by Nemaha Central and Maur Hill-Mount Academy who sit at No. 4 & No. 5 respectively. The Thunder are 17-3 coming off an 11-point win over Perry Lecompton which clinched the Big 7 League title outright, while the Ravens are the No. 1 seed of the upcoming 3A Sabetha sub-state after finishing the regular season 17-3 with a win over Pleasant Ridge last Tuesday. On the girl’s side of the 3A rankings Nemaha Central continues to be the only area team ranked moving up one spot to No. 8 this week off a win over Perry Lecompton last Tuesday finishing the regular season at 17-3.

Two Big 7 league girl’s teams continue to be ranked highly in the 4A-Div 2 rankings with Holton coming in at No. 4 and Jeff West at No. 5. The Wildcats are 16-4 on the season after going 1-1 last week with a win over Sabetha and a loss to Hiawatha, while the Tigers finished 16-4 in the regular season taking the league title outright with wins over Hiawatha and Perry Lecompton.

In the 1A-Div 1 rankings four area teams continue to be in the top 10 with two in the girl’s rankings and two on the boys. On the girl’s side Centralia continues to be the No. 1 ranked team in the state sitting at 19-1 on the year after wrapping up the Twin Valley League title last week with a win over Washington County. The Hanover girls also continue to be in the top five in 1A-D1 after finishing off the regular season 18-2 with wins over Linn and Axtell last week. In the boys 1A-D1 rankings Hanover and Doniphan West continue to represent the TVL in the top 10 checking in at No. 3 and No. 6, respectively. The Wildcats are 18-2 on the year after wins over Linn and Axtell last week, while the Mustangs fell to Onaga last week and finished up the regular season at 12-9.
