The 1A-Division II Sub-State at Axtell is wide open and all the teams entered the postseason looking to seize the opportunity laid in front of them and the Wetmore Cardinal boys took one step forward in the postseason with a first round Sub-State win over Blue Valley on Tuesday night, while taking steps forward as a program, too. The Cardinals flew high to snag the 67-43 win over the Rams and move into the Semifinals of the 1A-DII Sub-State at Axtell, while giving their first year head coach, David Martin a great birthday present.

Both teams started off slow with no points scored over the first few minutes of the game but them Blue Valley worked to a 7-3 advantage only to see Wetmore answer to carry a 12-9 lead after one quarter. The Cardinals picked up the pace in the second quarter and threw the press at Blue Valley forcing the Rams into close to 30 turnovers on the night and Wetmore then used those opportunities to directly get buckets and a 17-8 second quarter gave Wetmore a 29-17 lead at intermission. The Rams didn't go away quietly battling in the third and cutting the Cardinals lead to nine points entering the fourth when Wetmore put the pedal to the metal and raced the lead back out farther and finished the game with a 26-11 fourth with Joel Hutfles who had his best game posting 11 of his game-high 25 points in the final frame for Wetmore and the Cardinals earned the 67-43 win.

In the loss Blue Valley was led by Bryson Brockman who tallied five three-pointers for 15 points as the Rams season close out with a 1-20 record.

Hutfles paced the Cardinals with his 25 points busting out in the second half for 20 of his 25 in the contest earning him Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA. Ethan Osterhaus and Kyle Bloom each added double figures with 15 and 14 points, respectively in Wetmore's second win of the season putting them at 2-18 on the year.

The win moves Wetmore into the Semifinals of the 1A-DII Sub-State at Axtell as they will play the one seeded St. Xavier on Friday night at 6:00pm.
