A trio of Northeast Kansas League doubleheaders continued the legion baseball season on Sunday.

Silver Lake went on the road and earned a sweep of Doniphan County winning 15-9 and 4-3, while Oskaloosa won a twinbill over Corning 14-6 and 11-0. The Leavenworth at Seneca doubleheader did not take place due to Leavenworth not having enough players, thus Seneca has been awarded two wins via forfeit.

Silver Lake Uses Late Runs to Earn Sweep of Doniphan County

After a non-league showdown the previous week Doniphan County and Silver Lake faced off against each other again this time in NEKL play as Doniphan County hosted the action. Silver Lake avenged the two losses with 15-9 and 4-3 wins.

Doniphan County held the early lead plating four-runs in the bottom of the third but Silver Lake got two runs back in the top of the fourth making 4-2 entering the fifth. The fifth is when the game flipped Silver Lake's way as Doniphan County looked to get out of the inning on a potential double-play but failed to do so and Silver Lake went on to score eight-runs in the inning and take the lead. Doniphan County got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth but saw Silver Lake score a run in the sixth and four in the seventh, while only scoring three more in the bottom of the seventh for themselves as Silver Lake secured the 15-9 win.

Josh Boyd led the Silver Lake offense notching three hits, while Justin Keller had two hits and Brady Snook recorded three RBI's, while the team drew 13 walks. Kyle Frick tossed four innings and Garret Huske threw three innings in the win.

Doniphan County in the loss had Brody Winder record three hits with three RBI's, while Wil Smith had two RBI's but the offense left 12 on base. Zeb Speer started the game going four and one-third giving up nine runs only two earned with three strikeouts and three walks, while Smith pitched two and two-thirds. Five errors also hurt Doniphan County in the loss.

Game two featured a strong pitching performance from both sides as Joey Clark and Bryson Kirkland duel it out on the mound. Silver Lake took the initial lead with two-runs in the top of the third only to see Doniphan County respond with two runs of their own to tie the game. Both teams again got on the board in the fifth each plating a run. Game was 3-3 entering the seventh and Silver Lake got the lead runner on via an error and brought him around to score what proved to be the winning run 4-3 earning the sweep.

Clark in the win went seven innings giving up three runs on seven hits, while Boyd once again led the Silver Lake offense registering three of the teams eight hits and notching two RBI's.

Smith led Doniphan County with a home run and two RBI's, while Kirkland took the tough loss on the mound going seven innings giving up four runs (two earned) on eight hits, one walk and two strikeouts.

The pair of wins moved Silver Lake to 11-3 overall on the season, while Doniphan County fell to 11-4 on the year with the losses.

Oskaloosa Sweeps Corning in League Play

It was a tale of two different games on Sunday between Oskaloosa and Corning but at the end of each contest Oskaloosa owned the win each time winning 14-6 and 11-0.

Corning jumped up early in game one scoring four runs on a grand slam by Braden Deters but that lead was short lived as Oskaloosa answered in the bottom of the first with four runs of their own to tie the game. A Kobe Rumbo solo homer in second pushed Corning back into the lead with a 5-4 advantage but Oskaloosa tied the game and took the their first lead in the bottom of the second with two-runs getting the go ahead run on an RBI double by Dawson Gatzemeyer. Oskaloosa took a firm grasp on the lead with four-runs in the third inning and added another run in the fourth and three in the sixth, while Corning managed just one more coming in the fifth and Oskaloosa earned the 14-6 win.

Tate Swank led Oskaloosa going 3-4 with four RBI's, while Hunter Reed and Gatzemeyer each added a multi-hit day and Tucker Sherretts had three RBI's.

Quinn Buessing and Deters led Corning each registering a three hit contest as Deters had four RBI's.

Early and often offense and strong pitching by Dante Nelson propelled Oskaloosa to the game two victory as they out-hit Corning 11-2 in the game for the 11-0 four inning win. Two-runs in the first gave Oskaloosa the led and they added to that with three runs in the second and third inning each and two more in the fourth to secure the win. Nelson tossed all four innings of the shutout and gave up just two hits, no walks and struck out six earning the win on the mound for Oskaloosa.

Nelson also recorded a two-hit game, while Reed and Seth Coltrane each added two-hits for Oskaloosa. Corning struggled with only two-hits, while Jackson Glessner took the loss on the mound.

The pair of wins moved Oskaloosa to 10-5 on the season, while Corning fell to 1-13 on the year with the pair of losses.
