Leavenworth & Oskaloosa Legion Baseball Qualify for State in AAA

Postseason continued the legion baseball season starting over the weekend and the AAA Zone tournament hosted by Leavenworth just spanned two days to decide who will head to State next week in Ottawa. 

At the end of the action from Saturday and Sunday both Leavenworth and Oskaloosa out of the Northeast Kansas League are each head to the AAA State tournament after qualifying by winning Zone and finishing runner-up. 

On Saturday Leavenworth held off Oskaloosa for a 4-3 win and Lawrence beat Topeka 11-1. Oskaloosa then later in the day beat Topeka 6-3 to remain alive in the postseason. 

Sunday saw Leavenworth take the Zone tournament crown with a 14-5 win over Lawrence and then Oskaloosa and Lawrence meet up for a the runner-up spot and Oskaloosa won 9-1 in five innings. 

Both Leavenworth and Oskaloosa will head to the AAA State tournament next week in Ottawa which is set to commence Wednesday July 26th. 

Leavenworth Holds On to Beat Oskaloosa

The first game of the AAA Zone tournament in Leavenworth featured two Northeast Kansas League teams in action against each other and Leavenworth held on for the 4-3 win over Oskaloosa. 

Oskaloosa took the initial lead scoring a run in the top of the second inning but Leavenworth snagged the lead in the bottom of the second by plating two-runs. The lead grew for Leavenworth with a two-run bottom of the sixth giving them a 4-1 lead entering the top of the seventh. Down to their final three outs Oskaloosa made things interesting by scoring two-runs but fell short of a comeback as Leavenworth held on for the 4-3 victory. 

Reid Herken tossed six innings giving up three runs on seven hits and struckout two to earn the win for Leavenworth. While, Tucker Sherretts took the loss for Oskaloosa going six innings surrendering four runs on eight hits and struckout three. Nathan Buss and Cooper Thurston each had two hits for Oskaloosa in the loss. 

Oskaloosa Stays Alive in Postseason With Win Over Topeka

After a loss in the Saturday morning Oskaloosa looked to remain alive in the postseason and faced off with Topeka on Saturday evening and picked up the 6-3 win to keep the season going. 

The bottom of the first saw Oskaloosa grab the lead with a run and then they added a run in the fourth and fifth innings to lead 3-0. Topeka however tied the game in the top of the sixth tallying three-runs but Oskaloosa had an answer and had a three-run bottom of the sixth and went on to win 6-3. 

Seth Coltrane tossed six innings in the win for Oskaloosa striking out six, while Cooper Thurston led the offense with two hits and three RBI's in the win. 

Leavenworth Wins Zone With Route of Lawrence

Entering the Zone tournament Leavenworth had just two wins but managed to double that output and in doing so won the Zone tournament title earning a bid to the AAA State tournament. In the Zone Championship Leavenworth earned the 14-5 win over Lawrence. 

Leavenworth took the early lead with two-runs in the top of the first inning and added a run in the second. The lead swung to Lawrence in the bottom of the third as they tallied their first runs of the game scoring four. Each team notched another run in the third but Leavenworth regained the lead with two-runs in the fourth and didn't give up the lead scoring the rest of the runs in the game. With four-run fifth and seventh innings Leavenworth put the game out of reach cruising to the 14-5 win over Lawrence. 

Tanner Morris tossed four innings and had two hits in the win for Leavenworth, while Preston Pfannenstiel threw three innings and recorded two RBI's. Reid Herken led the offense with three hits and three RBI's, while Jacob Emerson tallied a pair of RBI's. 

With the two wins in Zone Leavenworth moved their record to 4-17 on the year.

Oskaloosa Earns Bid to State With Win Over Lawrence

One more bid was up for grabs at the AAA Zone in Leavenworth on Sunday and after a loss in Zone for both Oskaloosa and Lawrence both faced each other for right to be Zone runner-up and head to State. Oskaloosa took the contest 9-1 in five innings. 

In the bottom of the second Oskaloosa took the lead with two-runs but Lawrence tallied a run in the top of the fourth to cut the lead in half. Oskaloosa had a big answer to the first Lawrence run by scoring five-runs in the bottom of the fourth with a triple by Nathan Buss highlighting the inning. The game finished in the bottom of the fifth when Oskaloosa scored two runs to win 9-1 over Lawrence. 

Dawson Gatzemeyer picked up the win tossing all five innings giving up one run on five hits, a walk and struckout four, while also recording two RBI's. Buss led the offense with four hits, while Tate Swank had two hits and two RBI.

After a 2-1 performance in Zone Oskaloosa moved to 17-11 on the season.
