It's just the second year for high school baseball at Sabetha high school but this group of Bluejays have been playing ball together for a long time and it has showcased itself this season as the Bluejays earned a spot in the 3A State Tournament. Bluejays topped Pleasant Ridge 13-3 in five innings in the Semifinals and then took down Maur Hill-Mount Academy 10-1 in the Championship.

Sabetha after a first round bye took on Pleasant Ridge in the first Semifinal of the day in Atchison at Maur Hill and the Bluejays flew out to the early advantage scoring four in the bottom of the first on just one hit, four walks and a hit batter. Pleasant Ridge got an RBI double by Clayton Richter and scored two runs in the top of the third to make it a 4-2 contest but Sabetha answered with two runs in bottom of the inning with a RBI single by Brett Stallbaumer highlighting the frame. The Rams managed another run in the fourth, but once again Sabetha answered this time with four runs and batted around in the bottom of the fourth with a two RBI single by Preston Bruning highlighting the frame. In the bottom of the fifth Sabetha finished the game with two runs including a RBI single by Bruning that brought in the final run to end the game with a run-rule at 13-3.

Trevor Kramer was strong on the mound for Sabetha tossing all five innings for the win giving up just three runs on six hits and one walk, while striking out three. Offensively Sabetha took advantage of seven walks, a hit batter and four Pleasant Ridge errors to go with nine hits. Brandon Brownlee was 3-3 with a RBI and walk, while Bruning went 2-3 with four RBI and Gabe Garber was 2-4 with two run scored and an RBI.

After Maur Hill topped Hiawatha 10-0 in five innings in the other Semifinal the skies opened up and rainfall postponed the Championship contest for a bit but shortly after 7:00pm the Championship game got underway. Both teams played through the fourth inning in steady rainfall before the skies cleared up for the remainder of the contest. Sabetha took the early lead in the rain scoring three in the bottom of the second with a two RBI double by Bruning in the inning and added another run in the third to lead 4-0. Maur Hill got what would be their only hit of the game in the fourth on a leadoff double by Abe Seibenmorgen and he came around to score to make it 4-1 entering the bottom of the fourth. In the bottom of the fourth Sabetha batted around and Maur Hill used three different pitchers as the Bluejays scored six runs in the frame on just two hits and four walks. An RBI double by Brayden Becker highlighted the inning and Sabetha led 10-1 after four innings. It remained that score going into the seventh inning and Maur Hill worked the bases loaded with two-outs trying a rallying but Sabetha corralled the final out and earned the 10-1 win.

Becker was spectacular on the mound for Sabetha to earn the win tossing five innings giving up just one run on one hit and six walks, while striking out nine; Joe Gruber tossed the final two innings to finish off the game. Bruning led the offense going 2-3 with a pair of doubles and two RBI, while Riley Herrmann went 2-4 and Blake Frey drew a pair of walks and scored two runs.

Sabetha heads into the 3A State tournament with a 20-3 record on the season and will be in action for State starting Thursday, May 24th in Manhattan at Tointon Family Stadium.
