Top 10 Countdown of Kanzaland Area Sports Moments in 2012 -- #7 & #6

With the year coming to a close it marks the time of the year when everyone looks back at all the events and happenings over the course of the year. We at Kanzaland radio thought there's no better way to close out a great year of Kanzaland area sports with a Top 10 countdown of the top Kanzaland area sports moments in 2012.

We will announce the top 10 on the Kanzaland sports reports during the week leading up to the number one announcement on December 31st. Kanzaland Sports 2012 Moment #7:
50 Area Wrestlers Compete at State and One Captures a State Title

Action on the mat over the course of 2012 was great for many area wrestlers and their squads enjoyed great seasons. Seventeen area schools were represented between the 4A and 3-2-1A state tournaments for wrestling this year, with 50 total wrestlers competing in the action.

Doniphan West wrestler, Austin Veach Thirteen individuals placed in the top 10 of action on the mat at the state tournament with one state championship captured in the weight class of 220lbs of Class 3-2-1A, as Doniphan West senior, Austin Veach went 4-0 in action to be the only Kanzaland area wrestler to capture a state title. Veach won three of the four matches by fall including a win the championship in 1:41 and he won his other match by a 7-2 decision.

Five of the thirteen individual top 10 performers came away with second place finishes as Hunter Speer of Horton, Jared Johnson of Pleasant Ridge, Trevin Edelman of Sabetha and James Landoll and Eddie Creek both of Marysville.

Two fourth place finishes were captured (Centralia-Andrew Beck & Marysville-Josh Goepert), one fifth place finish (Sabetha-Tyler Edelman) and four sixth place finishes (ACCHS-Logan Bowen, Justin Wagner and Taylor Schuetz & Sabetha-Levi Huneke).

With plenty of the area wrestlers that performed well at state returning this season the wrestling season has started off with a bang, as 18 wrestlers head into the holidays ranked in the latest polls. Seven wrestlers are ranked in Class 4A and 11 in Class 3-2-1A. Fourteen of the 18 wrestlers currently ranked this season made state last year.

Wrestling looks to be in for another good year in the Kanzaland area with plenty of wrestlers who will look to vie for bids to go to state this season.

Kanzaland Sports 2012 Moment #6:
72 Area Runners Competed at State in Cross Country with Three Runners Capturing State Titles

Running is the name of the game and for a distance in the sport cross country and three Kanzaland area runners showcased they are the top runners in the state with their performances at the state meet in the respective classifications.

In Class 3A, it was Hiawatha sophomore, Jordan Puvogel capturing the state title with a time of 15:30.60 and it was a sweep in Class 1A as seniors, Lukas Koch of Centralia and Audrey Schmitz of Axtell each captured titles with times of 16:16 and 15:49.10, respectively. 2012 Kanzaland Area State Cross Country Champs

Both, Jordan and Lukas had great season winning every meet they competed in while Audrey finished in the top 3 of every meet she competed in. Audrey also registered a bigger feat as she three-peated this year as state champion.

While, the three state champions highlighted the cross country season for the Kanzaland area, there were plenty other great performances at state with the total 72 area runners that competed in the competitions, as 12 more runners finished with Top 20 performances.

Next year sets up to be another solid year for cross country in the area with a lot of young runners blossoming onto the scene, but one thing is for sure 2012 was a stellar year for cross country in the Kanzaland area.
