2021 Zone Tournament at Sabetha - Bracket

The legion baseball zone tournament at Sabetha kicked off Sunday night for area AA teams and it was Marysville along with Doniphan County who each picked up wins to advance to Monday night’s winners bracket.

Marysville Walks Off Hiawatha

The opening game of the night was not the prettiest with both teams combining for seven walks and four errors, but Marysville was able to make enough plays and come from behind to beat Hiawatha 6-5 in walk-off fashion.

Marysville took a 2-1 lead after two innings on an RBI groundout from Payton LeDuc and an RBI-single by Jon Haggard.

Hiawatha responded with three runs in the third innings on an RBI-single from Bricen Lee, a Marysville error and an RBI-single from Xavier Oldham.

In the bottom of the third Marysville responded with an RBI-single from Ayden Price to make a 4-3 Hiawatha lead before Bricen Lee pushed the Hiawatha lead back to two with an RBI groundout.

Marysville came back and tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning on a double from Zach Haefele and a triple from Ben Kirkland.

That 5-5 score held until the bottom of the seventh when Tregan Graff started the inning off with a hit by pitch before eventually coming around to score the winning run on a passed ball.

Graff was named the McDonald’s Player of the Game on KNZA after recording two hits and three runs scored along with tossing the final 1.2 innings.

Ayden Price added two hits for Marysville while Zach Haefele added an RBI-double.

In the loss Hiawatha got two hits from Ashton Rockey, two RBIs from Bricen Lee and two hits from Jake Rieger.

Marysville with the win advances to the quarterfinals Monday night where they will face 2-seed Corning at 6 p.m. while Hiawatha moves to the loser’s bracket.

Doniphan Uses 9-run Fourth to Down Seneca

Behind a 9-run fourth innings, Doniphan County took control over Seneca and never looked back in a 10-1 victory.

DC got the scoring started with a run in the third inning on an error to take a 1-0 lead, before the 9-run fourth.

In that fourth Doniphan County sent 14 batters to the plate and recorded five hits, four walks, one hit batsman and an error.

Seneca kept the game going with a run in the top of the fifth on an RBI-double from Landen Baker, but that is all Seneca would get on the night.

Connor Hayes, Kobe Davis, and Braden Chalfant combined for the win on the mound for DC with Hayes going five innings allowing just one run on seven hits with five strikeouts.

Kole Franken and Chalfant were named our McDonald’s co-players of the game on KNZA as Franken had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI, while Chalfant was on base four times and scored two runs.

Doniphan County advances to take on top-seeded Sabetha in the winner’s bracket Monday night at 8 p.m. with live coverage on 103.9 KNZA, while Seneca moves to the loser’s bracket Tuesday night.
