The High School sports seasons are just getting underway for the 2021-2022 school year and there are plenty of great athletes returning for Cross Country across Northeast Kansas.

The Doniphan West girls claimed their second straight 1A state title in 2020 posting three inside the top 11. Key returners include SR Elle Williams who finished 2nd, JR Chloe Clevenger finished 5th (but has since moved to McPherson) and JR Claire Cole in 11th. JR Lilly Clark also returns after finishing in the top 50.

The Clifton Clyde girls also had a strong showing at state last season finishing in 10th place as a team. Clifton Clyde did lose a couple of key seniors off that roster but return a few with state experience. SR Paige Bowser and SO Elisa Sorell will headline another strong season.

The boys 1A class will have some high expectations with teams like Jackson Heights and Wetmore finishing inside the top ten at 1A state last season. SR Daniel Little returns for Jackson Heights after finishing 6th at state last season. SO Nathaniel Linck finished inside the top 35.

In girls Class 3A, Sabetha has the luxury with SO Leah Lukert who finished 12th at last year's state meet in Wamego, joined by her junior sister Mary Lukert who was a Regional champion.  Perry-Lecompton should have high expectations this season after having a couple participate at the state meet including SO Ryleigh Morgan.

The Sabetha boys and Perry-Lecompton boys return after strong showings at the state meet last year as well. Sabetha finished in 5th while Perry-Lecompton finished in 9th. SO Kalvin Evans posted a strong showing as a freshman finishing inside the top 20 at state with an 18th place finish. Seniors Cameron Harrell and Tyrese Bishop each finished inside the top 40. JR Boyd Sollars could be a big piece for Perry-Lecompton this season.

The Jeff County North girls and the McLouth boys claimed the NEKL titles last season and will have strong showings once again in 2021.

Great athletes and solid teams around the area will provide a lot of competition with state championship goals on the mind for all competing.
