Offenses were on full display Friday night in Denton as Doniphan West edged out Valley Falls 56-46 in a shootout to take over third place in 8-man DI District 3.

Both teams scored on their first four offensive possessions with Doniphan West stopping a 2-point conversion try to take a 32-30 lead at the break.

The Mustangs received two rushing touchdowns by senior quarterback Trent Spiker while Kole Franken and Braden Simmons each added rushing scores.

Valley Falls received their four touchdowns on a 60-yard run from Zac Evans, a 1-yard run by quarterback Dylan Cervantez, and two touchdowns from Samuel Drinkard running one and catching another.

Doniphan West got the ball out of the halftime break and continued their offensive onslaught with Simmons scoring from 20 yards out, but Valley Falls responded one play later with Drinkard rushing 65 yards to pull the Dragons back to within two.

Once again Doniphan West needed no time to find the end zone to respond as Simmons recorded his third rushing score of the night to give the Mustangs a 48-38 advantage.

Valley Falls was not going to go away quietly though as the Dragons needed just four plays for Drinkard to record his third rushing touchdown of the game to make it 48-46 late in the third quarter.

The Dragons defense finally stepped up on Doniphan West’s ensuing drive haulting a 13-play drive by picking off a pass, but the Mustangs responded by forcing a turnover on downs to keep a two-point lead.

Following the turnover on downs the Mustangs would put the final nail in the coffin with 90 seconds to go as Spiker would record his third rushing touchdown of the night to put the game out of reach for good.

Spiker was outstanding all night rushing 23 times for 256 yards and three touchdowns while Simmons added 151 more yards and his three scores. Kole Franken also finished with 84 yards and a score.

Valley Falls in the loss had Drinkard go over 200 total yards with four scores while Cervantez went over 100 yards and added a score along with 69 yards from Evans.

Next up for Doniphan West (3-4) is a tough road game at Burlingame, while Valley Falls (3-4) hosts Washington County to finish off the regular season.
