The 2021 high school football regular season ended Friday night and in Sabetha the Bluejays wrapped up the third spot in Class 3A District Four with a 42-3 victory over Hiawatha.

The Redhawks got off to a great start though receiving the opening kick and driving deep into Sabetha territory before Xavier Oldham connected on a 35-yard field goal to give Hiawatha a 3-0 advantage.

Sabetha then fumbled on their opening possession giving Hiawatha the football back, but Hiawatha missed a long field goal attempt and then went three-and-out on the rest of their drives in the first half.

Sabetha finally got something going on their fourth possession of the game and got the big play to get the offense jump-started as Josh Herrmann scampered 47 yards for a touchdown to give the Bluejays a 7-3 lead.

After forcing another punt on Hiawatha’s next possession, the Bluejays tacked on a second touchdown on a 1-yard run by Thad Menold for his first touchdown of the season giving Sabetha a 14-3 advantage at halftime.

The third quarter is where Sabetha really started to take control as Marcus Bauman ran the opening kick off back for a touchdown before following that up with a 37-yard receiving touchdown on a pass from Matthew Garber giving the Bluejays a 28-3 lead.

Sabetha would tack on two late scores on a 29-yard receiving touchdown from Tristan Wittwer and a 17-yard run by Abe Wehner to cap off the dominant second half performance.

Josh Herrman led the Bluejays with 105 yards on the ground with a score while Garber completed just two passes, but both went for scores.

Hiawatha was led in rushing by Cody Nevels who finished with 81 yards while Brandt Barnhill added 69 yards.

Both teams now get set for the opening round of playoffs next week as Sabetha (4-4) will travel to Perry Lecompton while Hiawatha (4-4) heads to Hayden.
