Doniphan County Advances to Legion Zone Tournament Title Game; Marysville Survives Corning to Advance
By Brandon Tadtman

The 2022 Kansas American Legion Baseball Zone 1AA Tournament continued on Monday night in Wathena.

Elimination Game: Marysville 9, Corning 6

This game looked to be all Marysville's early on as they scored the first nine runs of the game to take a commanding lead.

Marysville scored two in the first, four in the second, and three more in the fourth to lead 9-0 before Corning started to put something together.

Corning would score five runs in the fourth on just one hit and would add one more in the fifth on two hits to get to within 9-6 but that score would hold up the rest of the way.

Connor Halbert drove in a pair for Marysville and reached base three times. Nate Fisher added three singles while driving in two runs in the three run fourth inning.

With the loss, Corning is eliminated from the tournament and their summer comes to an end. They were led by Ian Haverkamp who had two doubles and drove in two runs.

Marysville will play Seneca Tuesday night at 6:00 PM in Wathena in another elimination game with the winner playing Hiawatha in the nightcap to see who advances to the Championship game.

Winners Bracket: Hiawatha 9, Doniphan County 16

Doniphan County and Hiawatha played deep into the night as they played until nearly 11:30 PM.

The game featured a lot of runs, hits and errors between the two teams. Hiawatha scored two quick runs in the first to take an early lead but Doniphan County would score three in the bottom of the first to take the lead.

DC extended their lead to 12-3 after four innings as they added three in the third and six more in the fourth.

Hiawatha didn't go away quietly as they would score six runs in the fifth inning on three hits but Doniphan County followed that at-bat to add three more and they were able to pull away for the win.

Doniphan County hit two home runs in the game. They went back-to-back in the third with Preston Christenson hitting a two-run shot and that was followed by Kobe Davis going yard.

Davis finished the game 4 for 4 with six RBI's while Ashton Rockey led Hiawatha going 3 for 5.

With that win, Doniphan County advances to the Zone Tournament Championship Game which will be played on Wednesday night.

They will play either Marysville, Seneca, or Hiawatha.
