The Hiawatha girls basketball team won an absolute thrilling game on Saturday over Marysville 43-42 to claim their second consecutive Hiawatha Invitational Tournament Championship.

The Redhawks used a dominant second quarter to take a 34-23 halftime lead but the Bulldogs rallied in the second half to take this game down to the wire.

Hiawatha freshman Kenzie Nelson was the hero for Hiawatha as she was fouled with one second left in the game when it was tied at 42-all which gave her a one-and-one at the free throw line.

Needing to hit one for the win, Nelson stepped up and buried the first one which was the game winning shot for the Redhawks.

The second fell off the rim and the time expired and the celebration began for Hiawatha. Nelson finished with only one point in the game but it was the biggest point of the game.

Hiawatha was led in scoring by Darcy Lierz who had a fantastic tournament, she finished with 20 points and five rebounds.

Marysville got 20 points and six rebounds from Bella Rader as she also had a fantastic tournament. Rader also hit six three-pointers in the game.

Marysville is 4-9 overall after the tournament and they also picked up a win over 2A #4 Jackson Heights in the semi-finals. Marysville is back in action on Tuesday night at Riley County.

Hiawatha moves to 7-6 after the tournament win and will be back in action Tuesday night at Nemaha Central. Those games will be live on the Hiawatha Channel and KNZA 103.9 FM
