2023 Sports in Kansas Boys Basketball Player of the Year Finalists

Sports in Kansas has announced their 2023 Boys Basketball Player of the Year finalists. 

There are 15 finalists in Class 3A with three from our area. They include Matthew Garber of Sabetha, Kamryn Kaniper of Perry Lecompton, and Jack Lauer of Marysville. 

Marysville posted one of their best seasons ever making it all the way to the 3A State Title game. Perry Lecompton qualified for state and Sabetha was undefeated and ranked #1 most of the season and into Sub-State tournaments. 

The 2A finalists are led by Zac Evans of Valley Falls. Zac averaged nearly 20 points per game this season and led the Dragons to the Sub-State Semi-Finals. 

Clifton Clyde's Trent Long is a finalist in Class 1A-I as they won the TVL title this season and made it to the State Tournament in Dodge City. 

Class 1A-II finalists include Axtell's Isaac Detweiler and Hanover's Josh Zarybnicky. Axtell beat Hanover in the Sub-State Title game to advance to the State Tournament where the Eagles finished in fourth place. 

Defensive Player of the Year finalists include Jesse Greenly of Atchison in Class 4A, Brandon Schmelzle of Axtell in 1A-I, Trent Long of Clifton Clyde, and Chase Bruna of Hanover.
