Jefferson County North sweeps home doubleheader against Valley Falls

Jefferson County North picked up a big time league sweep on Friday night when hosting their rival, the Valley Falls Dragons. In both games, JCN used big runs to take a lead and never give it back. The girls final was 52-39. The boys final was 53-42. 

The girls game was back and forth for almost the entire first quarter, with about a minute left in the frame, JCN scored 5 in a row to break an 8-8 tie to take a 13-8 lead after one quarter. 

That momentum would carry over into the start of the second quarter as JCN improved their lead to 21-8, Valley Falls was able to battle back however to make the halftime score 29-22. 

In the third quarter, JCN ramped up the defensive intensity allowing just three points the whole quarter. JCN would head to the fourth quarter up 42-25. 

In the final frame, JCN kept the lead at arms length and won by a final score of 52-39. The big three of seniors, Abby Laird, Clara Johnson and Emily Langley led JCN to a victory. Johnson finished with 17 points to lead the Chargers, Langley had 10 points and 9 rebounds, and Abby Laird was the Citizens State Bank player of the game with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Korie Kirkwood had 17 points to lead Valley Falls. 

The boys game started slow, as neither team was able to score the first couple minutes. However, Valley Falls then went on a 7-0 run that forced a JCN timeout. JCN would respond and end the quarter on a 7-2 run, as Valley led 9-7 after one quarter. 

Scoring picked up in the second quarter as both teams scored 13 points each in a fast-paced, up and down second quarter, the Dragons would take a 22-20 lead into intermission. 

The third quarter was the difference in the game as Jefferson County North ramped up the pressure on defense and forced a number of turnovers and long shots by the Dragons. With this the Chargers were able to get out and use their speed to get a number of transition buckets. JCN won the quarter 20-5 and took a 40-27 lead to the final quarter. 

In the fourth quarter it was back and forth, but the Dragons were unable to cut the lead to single digits at any time as JCN would win by a final of 53-42. 

The Citizens State Bank player of the game was Carson McAfee for JCN as he finished with a game high 15 points and had a number of assists to his teammates. Zac Evans finished with 11 points for the Dragons. 

Next for Jefferson County North is at home for ACCHS on Tuesday. As for the Dragons they will look to get back into the win column as they play at Pleasant Ridge on Tuesday.
