Doniphan West girls and boys both got dominant home wins over Onaga. The girls won 66-34, and the boys won 50-33. The Mustang boys picked up their first home league win since February 17th, 2022.

After Onaga scored the opening two-pointer, Doniphan West didn’t allow another point in the first quarter as they went on a 13-0 run which included three total three-pointers. Courtney Johnson knocked one down as time expired.

For both teams, it was all about sharing the ball. Doniphan West had eight different scorers in the first half, and Onaga had five. It wasn’t until about three minutes left in the half that someone had multiple field goal makes. Johnson made another triple and led all scorers at halftime with six points, and Doniphan West had a 30-16 lead.

The Mustangs were able to put together two solid offensive quarters scoring 18 points in each of them. Malaina Whetstine finished the game shooting 3-for-7 from beyond the arc with a team-leading 12 points. She also went 3-for-4 from the free-throw line, making her the Player of the Game brought to you by Farmers State Bank. Johnson also finished with 12 points in the game, tying her for the team lead. Emmyjo Whetstine scored nine points with all of them coming in the second half. Onaga was led by Bridgett Campbell, who had 13 points, and Emmarsyn Fordham finished with eight points.

In the first quarter of the boys game, Onaga went 0-for-10 from beyond the arc. Doniphan West wasn’t much success either from deep, but they were feeding Michael Albers, who had seven points in the quarter. Kolter Peterson also had seven, and their defense held the Buffaloes to just one field goal make, to give Doniphan West an 18-3 lead.

Cooper Eberly made a pair of three-pointers in the second quarter, and Peterson scored four to keep the Mustangs in front. Onaga freshman Casen Hutfles had five points in the quarter to keep the Buffaloes in it. Doniphan West had a 30-17 lead at halftime.

Things were getting heated in the third quarter with some words exchanged and some shoving. Onaga used it as fuel and was able to get back with a single-digit deficit early in the third quarter. Hutfles kept it going for the Buffs as he scored seven more points in the third quarter. However, Doniphan West was still able to hold on to a 39-26 lead going into the fourth.

Albers returned to first-quarter form in the fourth quarter by scoring six more points. He made three of the team’s five field goals, and Onaga’s offense wasn’t able to get into a rhythm. The Buffaloes were held to just seven points, and Doniphan West clinched their first home Twin Valley League win in nearly two years.

Albers finished with 13 points and is the Player of the Game brought to you by Farmers State Bank. Peterson also finished with 11, and Eberly had nine points. Hutfles scored 16 for the Buffaloes.
