Axtell Boys Three-Peat and Clifton-Clyde Girls Win Back-to-Back TVL Track and Field Titles

The Axtell boys won their third consecutive Twin Valley League title and the Clifton-Clyde girls won back-to-back league titles as well on Thursday afternoon at Valley Heights. 

The Clifton-Clyde girls finished the day with 102 points while Washington County finished in a close second with 95 points. Hanover (64), Frankfort (64), and Centralia (47) rounded out the top five team scores. 

Clifton-Clyde was led by Sevy Wurtz who won the 100m dash, 200m dash, and long jump while Shea Wurtz added a first place finish in the high jump.

Washington County won five events with McKenzie Baker in the 800m run, Addy Goeckel in the 100m and 300m hurdles, Jesse Hoover in the javelin, and adding another first in the 4x400m relay. 

Other notable winners included Gracie Grable of Troy winning the 1600m run, Belle Smith of Doniphan West winning the 3200m run, and Emmarsyn Fordham of Onaga winning the shot put and discus.  

Frankfort's Emma Hardwick finished second place in the 300m hurdles and her time of 47.3 seconds broke the school record previously set by her cousin Tia Roberts back in 2010. 

The defending 1A State Champion Axtell boys dominated the field with 202 points while Clifton-Clyde finished in second place with 67 points. Valley Heights (53), Blue Valley-Randolph (46), and Frankfort (40) rounded out the top five team scores. 

Axtell won 12 events with Brandon Schmelzle winning the 100m dash, long jump, and triple jump. Grady Buessing won the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m runs. Landon Schmitz won both the 110m and 300m hurdles and Sawyer Deters won both the shot put and discus. 

Other notable winners for the day included Kelby Windmeyer of Doniphan West in the 200m and 400m dash events, and Centralia's Ben Haverkamp in the javelin. 

The 4x100m relay was won by Frankfort which consisted of Jett Keller, Leo Fronza, Fred Hyde, and Ole Svae.
