The Hiawatha Post 66 legion baseball team finished their 2024 summer on Monday with a runner-up finish in the AA State Tournament in Concordia.
Game 1: Hiawatha 6, Iola 0
In a must win game, Cooper Jacobson gave Hiawatha a dominant performance on the mound. Jacobson pitched all seven innings allowing no runs, one hit, and six strikeouts.
Iola finished the game with only five total bases runners.
Offensively, Ashton Rockey led the charge as he finished 4-for-5 with two doubles, two singles, two RBI's, and two runs scored.
Sam Dunn and Brandt Barnhill also produced RBI's as Hiawatha would score two in the third and would put the game away with four in the sixth.
Game 2: Iola 10, Hiawatha 3
This game was truly decided in the later innings. Iola built a 4-0 lead through the first five innings with RBI's from Trey Sommer and Avery Blaufess with the other two on an error and a wild pitch.
The Hiawatha bats were quiet in that stretch with only three hits until the sixth inning. Hiawatha would get three runs to get to within one as Iola pitching gave up three walks and hit four batters.
Leading 4-3 going into the top of the seventh, Iola would have a similar stretch but would score six runs on just one hit. Hiawatha pitching gave up six walks, two hit batters, and a double as Iola sent 11 to the plate in their last at-bat.
Hiawatha's incredible season ends with a 30-12 record and runner-up finish at the AA Tournament. Iola's win secured their third straight AA State Championship.
