Hiawatha Dominates Jefferson West in Second Half for First Win of 2024

The Hiawatha Redhawks picked up their first win of the season on Friday night dominating Jefferson West in the second half winning 21-0. 

Both teams couldn't get much going in the first half as the game was scoreless after two quarters. The Redhawks had the best chance of getting points on their first drive of the game as they got in the redzone and missed a 27-yard field goal. 

Ethan Morton returned the second half kickoff 45 yards and Hiawatha was set up at the Jeff West 45 to begin the half. They converted on fourth and one at the Jeff West three yard line as Ethan Morton scored to give the Redhawks the first lead of the game at 7-0. 

Jefferson West follwed with their first possession in the second half and Michael Jensen got an interception and set up Hiawatha at the Jeff West 32 yard line. 

The Redhawks once again capitalized on the short field as Morton again found the endzone from four yards out to give the Redhawks a 14-0 lead. 

Jeff West would punt on their second possession of the second half and the Redhawks would work a drive into Tigers territory but would turn it over on downs early into the fourth quarter. 

Connor Kettler would put the game away with a 35-yard interception return for a touchdown to make the score 21-0 and that score would hold the rest of the way. 

Morton finished the game with 12 carries for 59 yards and two touchdowns while Josh Monaghan added 65 rushing yards on 14 carries. 

The Hiawatha defense had three interceptions in the second half and held Jefferson West to around 120 yards of total offense. 

Hiawatha (1-3) start district play off in the right direction and will head to Hayden for their week five matchup. Jefferson West (0-4) will return home in week five to face Holton.
