Day 1 Legion Zone 2 Baseball Tournament Recap: Corning and Seneca Post Big Wins

The American Legion Zone 2 Baseball Tournament opened up shop on Wednesday night in Wathena with Corning and Seneca picking up big wins. 

Game 1: Hiawatha 0, Corning 10

Corning blew this game open early with six runs in the second inning. They got big hits in that frame which included a three RBI double from Aiden Talley, an RBI double by LJ Koelzer, and an RBI single by Weston Schulejans. 

They would score three more runs in the fourth inning and one more in the fifth to help end the game early via the run rule. 

Ben Haverkamp pitched into the fifth inning for Corning and gave up five hits with four strikeouts and no walks. 

Hunter Lamond was the McDonald's of Hiawatha and Seneca Player of the Game as he reached base in all four of his at-bats. He reached his first three times on a walk and then ended the game in the fifth inning with a walk-off solo home run. 

The Hiawatha offense was held to just five hits with Cooper Wischropp finishing 2-for-2 with a double and a single. 

Game 2: Seneca 17, Doniphan County 5 

The Seneca offense came out with one of their better outputs of the season with 17 runs on eight hits. 

They were very good all night as they took a total of 18 walks between the five Doniphan County pitchers. 

The game got into the seventh inning when it started to rain and after a short delay the decision was made to call the game at that point. 

Seneca scored in all but one inning as they scored six in the seventh, four in the third, and three in the sixth inning. 

Seneca's Reese Gerety was named the McDonald's of Hiawatha and Seneca Player of the Game as his big night included a grand slam over the left field fence in the third inning. In total he finished 1-for-2 with a home run, five RBI's, two walks, and three runs scored. 

Kamden Scmitz pitched five strong innings for Seneca with five strikeouts and three walks. 

Doniphan County was held to just 1 run on four hits through the first four innings but were able to get four runs over the last two innings. 

Ryder Davis finished 2-for-4 with two RBI singles while Dustin Veach reached base four times with three singles and a walk adding three stolen bases and two runs scored.
