McDonald’s Player of the Game Award – Winners

The final full week of the Northeast Kansas League summer baseball season got underway Sunday night with nearly all area teams in action.

Below you can find the complete recap of each doubleheader from Sunday.

Sunday, July 12

Seneca sweeps Hiawatha

In our featured doubleheader on the MSC Sports Radio Network Seneca swept Hiawatha 12-2 and 7-5 in Seneca.

In game one on 103.9 KNZA Seneca scored four runs in the first, two in the second, three in the third and three more in the fourth to end it via the run-rule.

Brayden Uphaus and Dylan Schultejans were named our co-McDonalds Players of the game as Uphaus was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored at the plate while tossing all four innings allowing just three hits and one earned run.

Schultejans meanwhile finished 2-for-2 with two RBI and one walk.

Seneca also had Zac Kramer go 2-for-3 with three runs scored while Landon Baker added two RBI.

In game two Hiawatha started fast scoring three runs in the top of the first inning thanks to five walks, but Seneca came right back in the bottom of the first and scored four runs with the big hit coming from Brad Schmitz.

Seneca took complete control with three more runs in the second on three walks, a single and a pair of Hiawatha errors.

Hiawatha tried to make a comeback in the fifth scoring two runs on a pair of Seneca errors, but Landon Baker came on in relief and finished off the final two outs to end the game.

The two teams combined for just two hits in the contest with Seneca racking up both hits and 15 combined walks along with eight combined errors.

Valley Falls and Sabetha Split

As has been the case for most of the season Valley Falls and Sabetha split a doubleheader with the River Bandits winning the first game 12-5 and Sabetha the second game 4-3.

In game one Gage Burdick pitched the first five innings for Valley Falls allowing single runs in all five innings. 

Despite giving up 10 hits, Burdick was able to keep the damage to a minimum. 

The River Bandits erased a 2-0 deficit by scoring six runs in the third on only one hit taking advantage of five walks and a pair of wild pitches. 

Valley Falls scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings before putting the game out of reach in the seventh by scoring four runs. 

Trenton Kraxner of Valley Falls and Sabetha's Braden Argabright each had 3 hits in the contest.

In game two, Sabetha erased a 3-0 deficit by scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth to grab the 4-3 win. 

Argabright pitched the final 2 frames for the win. 

He led off the fourth inning with a double and was brought home on a Josh Herrmann double. 

After back-to-back hit batters, the Raptors took advantage of an error and a fielder's choice that included a throwing error to score four runs.

Doniphan County handles Corning in sweep

In a dominant showing on Sunday, Doniphan County picked up two double-digit wins over Corning 10-0 and 15-5.

In game one DC scored early and often while Conner Hayes delivered a no-hitter in an absolutely dominant 10-0 win in four innings.

Doniphan County scored five runs in the first on a 3-run home run by Alex Libel and a two-run double by Gavin Fuemmeler.

DC scored three more runs in the second on three hits including RBI’s from Libel and Kobe Davis to lead 8-0 before scoring the final two runs in the fourth.

Hayes was stellar throughout on the mound and was one walk away from a perfect game as he struck out four.

Libel led the offense with five RBI’s, while Davis added his two hits and two RBI. Charlie Grable chipped in three hits in the win while Hayes added two hits of his own.

In game two both offenses started hot with Doniphan County jumping out to an 8-3 lead after two innings with seven runs in the second on six hits in the inning.

Both teams added two runs in the fourth to make it a 10-5 game before DC put the game away with five runs in the fifth on three hits and four walks.

Trent Spiker, Alex Libel and Bray Davies each recorded two hits in the contest while Spiker, Davis, Libel and Kole Franken each added multiple RBI.

Corning got two hits from Derek Fischer in the loss while Ian Haverkamp added two RBI.
