Late Heroics Lift Nemaha Valley to Win Over Jeff West
By Mike Smith

It was week three for high school football in the state of Kansas and a showdown in the Big Seven league didn't disappoint for an entertaining Friday night. Nemaha Valley Raiders hosted the Jeff West Tigers with both teams in search of their second win of the season and second league win of the year. The Raiders captured the win in crazy fashion with a 14-7 win.

Points were at a premium in the game as we went three plus quarters with a score. The first was a tale of Jeff West's defense causing havoc on Nemaha Valley's offense forcing plenty of short drives, while the Tigers offense didn't do much better. Jeff West moved the ball somewhat more affective than the Raiders in the first half with the run game, but fumbled the ball three times including a fumble on the Raiders two yard line right before the half.

Scoreless at the half, both teams continued to stall on offense to start the second half. The Tigers did have two solid drives but the Raiders defense would come up with key fourth down stops in Raiders territory to take over on downs.

With about 3:35 left to go in the ballgame the offense came from both teams. Jeff West Tiger, Drew Slimmer picked off Nemaha Valley junior quarterback, Caleb Meyer to set up a short field and drove to score a 10-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback, Ian Mullins to his junior wideout, Slimmer; point after attempt good and the Tigers lead 7-0. Nemaha Valley, who had plenty of three and outs in the second half, needed to have the offense open up, and Meyer responded from his interception. After a hard time running the ball all game, the Raiders went to the air, but were forced backwards and found themselves with a fourth and 14, time slipping away and down 7-0.

No worries for the Raiders as out of a timeout junior quarterback, Meyer threw a 74-yard bomb to his tight end, Creighton Brinker down the far sideline for the touchdown. The Raiders went for the two-point conversion but come up short and still trailed in the game 7-6. Needing the ball back with just a little over a minute to go the Raiders successfully executed the onside kick and recovered on the Tigers 49. The next play the Raiders were headed back to paydirt, with a 49-yard touchdown pass from Meyer to his receiver, Alex Rottinghaus. NV went for the two-point conversion again and this time punched it in with David Holthaus, to lead the game 14-7 with :55 seconds left.

Jeff West would have one last chance but come up short as the Raiders defense held the Tigers and recorded a fourth down sack by linebacker, Michael Rottinghaus, to preserve the 14-7 score and get the win for the Raiders.

For the second straight week, the Raiders got the win and junior quarterback, Caleb Meyer was named the Community National Bank of Seneca and Sabetha "Player to Bank On" during the game on KMZA. Meyer threw for two touchdowns and over 160 yards with two big passing touchdowns late. Tiger quarterback, Mullins threw for about 180 yards and a touchdown to Slimmer.

Nemaha Valley improved to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the Big Seven, while Jeff West is now 1-2 and 1-2 in league play.
