Atchison Girls Take Second & Boys Third at KCA League Track Meet

With postseason track on the horizon area teams are competing in their respective league track meets. Atchison took to the track to compete in the KCA League meet on Tuesday and came away with a second place team finish for the girls and third place for the boys in the six team league.

Atchison girls tallied 181 team points, finishing 29 points behind the first place team in Sumner Academy, but finished 110 points ahead of third place. On the day it was the relay teams that paced the lady Red as Atchison earned the sweep in the relay competitions. In the 4x100 it was the quartet of Imogene Bratton, Mady Shipley, Akiela Gill and Sierra Smith teaming up to post a time of 50.16 to earn the gold. While Mady Shipley also ran on the 4x400 team that took first for Atchison behind a time of 4:21.49, as she teamed with Jailhyn Bratton, Anna Shipley and Kate McCoole. Atchison also took home the 4x800 relay title with the team of Sarah Jaloma, Tiffany Gillmore, Hailey Macierowski and Lyndi Hanson posting a time of 11:09.65 to win.

There were plenty of other top performances on the track for the lady Red at the KCA league meet also as Jaloma, McCoole and Smith won individual events on the track, too on top being on the winning relay teams. Jaloma paced her way to wins in the 800 meter run (2:31.40) and the 1600 meter run (5:40.77), while Smith sprinted her way to wins in both the 100 and 200 meter dash with times of 12.49 and 25.68, respectively. Lucy Newkirk also earned a first place on the track for Atchison winning the 3200 meter run behind a time of 13:20.99.

In the field events the lady Red were led by a pair of gold medal winners as Mady Shipley picked up her third gold of the day winning the pole vault (10'00) and Harleigh Boldridge won the javelin (96'00.50).

On the boys side of competition the Redmen took home third place as a team but were only 6.5 points behind the second place team on the day finishing with 105.5 team points. Redmen took home four first place finishes on the day, three on the track and one in the field events. Jerel Rawls and Justin Whitmer took home gold medals in the 400 meter dash (52.50) and 800 meter run (2:11.48), respectively. While, Whitmer and Rawls also won a gold with their teammates Bret Huntington and Ben Horvatic in the 4x800 meter relay by posting a time of 9:01.33 to take gold. Dane Anderson took home the other first place finish for Atchison winning the league title in the shot put with a toss of 47'01.50.

Atchison track meet now turns their attention to Regional track action on the horizon set for Friday May 23rd and the Redmen will compete in the 4A Regional at Basehor-Linwood
