Sacred Heart Wins Class D State Track Title

Sacred Heart 2014 Class D Boys State Track Champions

 One team champion was crowned and several individual athletes won medals during the Nebraska State Track Meet this past weekend in Omaha.
 Falls City Sacred Heart ran, jumped, and vaulted their way to the Class D Boys’ team title. The Irish had only five points heading into Saturday’s final day of the meet, but ran strong in a couple relays and finished with 49.5 team points to claim the team title. Sterling was a close second with 44 points, with Hartington third with 40 points. Pawnee City was one of four teams with 18 points, Diller-Odell had 14 points, and Lourdes Central Catholic scored 4 points.
 Sacred Heart won one event, with Chaz Dunn, Sawyer Kean, Austin Malone, and Henry Arnold winning the 1600-meter relay in 3:31.19.
 Sacred Heart was second in the 400-meter relay, with the team of Kean, Dunn, Malone, and Yianni Haralabidis finishing in 44.07-seconds.
 Other place-winners for the Irish include: Haralabidis, third in the 100 and 200-meter dash; Austin Malone, third in the long jump and seventh in the triple jump; Chaz Dunn, fourth in the long jump; Sean Strasheim, tied for fifth in the pole vault; and Henry Arnold, sixth in the triple jump.
 Sterling finished third in the 1600-meter relay, with the team of Trey Trauernicht, Rhet Dirks, Chris Wenzl, and Jesse Phillips. The Jets also finished second in the 3200-meter relay.
 Individually, Trauernicht was second in the 1600-meter run and fourth in the 800-meter run; Rhet Dirks was sixth in the 800; Kody Benson was third in the shot put and sixth in the discus; and Chris Wenzl was fourth in the shot put.
 Pawnee City senior Scott Borcher continued his dominance in the shot put, winning the all-class gold medal with a toss of 58-feet, 1.5-inches. Borcher also placed second in the Class D discus.
 
 In the Class D Girls’ meet, Pawnee City had two individual champions. Junior Shelby Hundley defended her title in the 300-meter hurdles and freshman Mariah Willey won the 100-meter hurdles. Willey also placed third in the long jump and Hundley was fifth in the 400-meter dash, and Hannah Davis placed eighth in the discus.
 Pawnee City tied placed fifth in the team standings with 31 points. Friend was fourth with 35 points, Sterling had 24 points for a ninth place finish, and Falls City Sacred Heart had one point.
 Maggie Goltz placed eighth in the triple jump Saturday afternoon with a distance of 34-feet, 6.5-inches.
 For Sterling, Jordan Lempka won the discus, Jazzy Eickhoff was seventh in the shot put, Taylor Cockerill finished third in the 1600-meter run and eighth in the 800-meter run, and Sterling was fourth in the 3200-meter relay.

 In Class C, the Freeman boys placed fourth with 36 points. Thayer Central was the team champion with 41 points.
 The Falcons’ Derek Zimmerman set a new Class C record and won the all-class gold medal with a leap of 48-feet, 9-inches in the triple jump. Zimmerman also won the long jump and was second in the 100-meter dash, and Cole Schuster placed second in the 110-meter hurdles.
 Spencer Sullivan picked up a point for Johnson County Central with an eighth place finish in the high jump.
 
 In Class B, the Syracuse girls finished ninth in the team standings with 26 points and Auburn scored two points.
 Individually, Haley Harsin of Syracuse finished second in the 1600-meter run and third in the 800-meter run. Sarah Antes was fifth in the pole vault, and the Rockets were fifth in the 1600-meter relay and 3200-meter relay.
 Auburn’s points came in the pole vault, where sophomore Taylor Petersen placed seventh.
 
 Falls City’s only competitor at the State Meet was junior Lee Huettner. He finished 12th overall in both the long jump and triple jump.

  Team champions were: Falls City Sacred Heart boys and St. Mary's girls in Class D; Thayer Central boys and Crofton girls in Class C; Cozad boys and Northwest girls in Class B; and Kearney boys and Lincoln Southwest girls in Class A.
