Axtell Earns First District Win of the Season on the Road Against Frankfort
By Mike Smith

Both teams came into the night in search of their first district win of the season and just ultimately trying to get back on the right track with a win, as the Axtell Eagles meet up with the Frankfort Wildcats on Friday night. The Eagles soared to a 50-14 win on the road over Frankfort.

Friday was a night of weather delays across Northeast Kansas in high school football but there was no delay in this ballgame outside of the delay early for both teams offenses that struggled to score until the fourth offensive drive of the game when the Axtell Eagles offense marched down the field six plays, all runs, to punch the ball in the from eight yards out with Aaron Schmelzle leading the way to an Axtell 6-0 lead.

Frankfort would waste no time in finding their offense, as well taking the next drive 65 yards on 13 plays, ending in a 15 yard touchdown pass from Wildcat quarterback, Alex Surdez to his receiver, Jake Rose. With two point conversion successful Frankfort gained the lead 8-6. That would be the last night Frankfort would lead the as the rest of the way the Axtell Eagles were in control with their running attack.

The rain start to come late in the first quarter and throughout the second and that's when Axtell came at Frankfort with quarterback, Taylor Platt on the ground rushing for close to 180 yards and three touchdowns on the night he would score the next three scores for Axtell on the evening. Eagles soared to a 22-8 halftime lead and would continue that momentum coming out of the half scoring on the first drive on four plays including 34 yard run by Schmelzle who finished the night close to 140 yards and four scores.

Schmelzle went on to score three second half touchdowns has the Eagles put the game out reach for the Wildcats. Frankfort did try to battle back but suffered a few times where they turned the ball over on downs and a fumble, also. Down 30-8 in the second half Frankfort marched the ball down the field for a one yard TD run by Lucas Adams, who finished the night with around 80 yards on the ground. Frankfort momentum would quickly be deflated with a 50 yard Schmelzle run for a TD for the Eagles on the next offensive play for Axtell.

Although Frankfort struggle to score, Wildcat quarterback, Surdez was 6-16 for 117 yards in the air, while Adams ran for around 80 yards and 59 yards on two receptions. Axtell did all their damage on the ground with both Platt and Schmelzle having around 180 and 140 yards each on the night, both accounting for the seven Axtell touchdowns.

With the win the Eagles improve to 3-4 on the season and Frankfort falls to 3-3 on the year. Axtell continues district play next week with game against Blue Valley-Randolph and Frankfort will head out of district play to play Independence Home School on Friday night.
