Onaga Wrestlers Win Lincoln Round Robin Tournament

The wrestling season started off with a bang for the Onaga Buffaloes as they traveled to compete in the Lincoln Round Robin Tournament and took home the team title.

The Buffaloes finished with 142 points to have the best team finish out of the eight teams competing at the tournament beating out Dodge City by six points to win the tournament.

Onaga was led by three individual first place performances on the day, while also having individual wrestlers earn four second place finishes, a pair of third place finishes and a sixth place finish. Pacing the way for the Buffaloes success on the day was Dominic Buterakos, Kyle Ames and Dustin Blow who all three earned first place finishes.

Buterakos at 120lbs started the day with an opening round bye and the went 4-0 from that point on, winning in the second round by pinfall 1:25 over a Republic County wrestler and then won in the third round by pinfall in 44 seconds over a grappler from Southeast of Saline. With those to wins he moved into the Championship bracket and won by pinfall in 52 seconds in the semifinals over his teammate, Brandon Merriman, pushing Dominic into the Championship bout. In the Championship match Buterakos picked up the 3-1 decision win over a wrestler from Republic County.

Ames at 195lbs put together a 5-0 day winning his weight class by picking up pinfall victories in all of his matches. Kyle opened the day winning in the opening round by pin, 1:05 over Southeast of Saline wrestler, then beat another Southeast of Saline grappler in the second round by pin in 32 seconds. In his next two matches he won in 3:18 and 3:47 by pin over wrestlers from Stafford and Republic County. In round five, Ames again picked up the pinfall win, beating a Dodge City wrestler in 1:27.

Blow like Buterakos and Ames brought home the gold in his weight class of 220lbs by going 4-0 in competition. Blow opened competition in round one by winning via pinfall in just 20 seconds over a wrestler from St. John's Military school and then won by a 9-4 decision in round two over a grappler from Southeast of Saline. Round four and five, were two more pinfall wins for the Buffaloes beating wrestlers from Republic County and Dodge City in 55 seconds and 1:46, respectively. Blow had a bye in round five of action at 220lbs.

Four Buffalo wrestlers took home second place on the day, as Tharrin D'Aloia, Kosta Buterakos, Jonathan Fairbanks and Jeffery Chestnut each won second place at their weight classes. D'Aloia notched a 4-1 record at 106lbs, picking up four pinfall wins of 1:49, 1:22, 26 seconds and 1:03 on the day. Tharrin's only loss came in round five again as he fell via pinfall, 3:31 to a wrestler from the host school Lincoln. Kosta Buterakos put together a 3-1 record at 126lbs, winning a pair of matches by pinfall 2:32 and 41 seconds and his other win was a major decision 13-1. Fairbanks only wrestled a pair of matches at his weight class of 132lbs and went 1-1 with his win coming via a technical fall, 17-2. While, Chestnut went 2-1 at 138lbs, finishing with two pinfall wins on the day of 5:07 and 44 seconds.

Brandon Merriman took third place at 220lbs going 3-2 on day and in his three wins he won by pinfall; winning in 1:11, 2:49 and in the third place bout winning in 5:31 via the pin. Quentin Lara also notched a third place finish for Onaga, coming at 182lbs after going 3-2. Lara's three wins on the day came in a 8-5 decision and pinfalls of 1:52 and 1:05.

Wyatt Cordell was the other Buffalo to compete on the day on the mats and he took home sixth place at 160lbs going 2-3 in action. Cordell's two wins on the mat both came via pinfall, winnings in 53 seconds and 1:12.

Onaga will look to continue the early season success on the mats on Thursday as they travel to Silver Lake for a Quad competition.
