Doniphan West Wrestlers Take Fifth as Team at Tonganoxie Invitational

Hitting the mats one final time before the holiday break there was plenty of action in Tonganoxie as they hosted tournament action with both Doniphan West and Atchison from the area involved. 

The Mustangs put together a strong day earning fifth place as a team out of 13 schools in competition with two first place finishes individually leading the way. Garret Dunlap continued his strong start to the season winning another tournament title at 160lbs as he posted a 5-0 day to win. Dunlap started the day with pinfall wins in just 27 and 58 seconds and followed that up in the Quarterfinals and Semifinals with two more pinfall wins in 58 seconds and 1:04, getting him into the Championship bout. In the Championship match Dunlap beat a wrestler from Frontenac by major decision 15-7 to earn the 160lbs title at the Tonganoxie Invitational. Joining Dunlap atop the podium for the day was Kody Collins as he wrestled his way to first place at 182lbs for Doniphan West going 4-0. Collins started his day with a win by pinfall in just 49 seconds and then received in a bye in round two and followed that with a pinfall win in 1:05 in round three. In the Semifinals the wins continued for Collins as he won in 1:25 by pinfall and went into the Championship bout to take on a wrestler from Louisburg who he beat by pinfall in just 43 seconds to win the 182lbs weight class title. 

Doniphan West on the day also had a second place, two fifth places, an eight place and a ninth place finish on the mats. Zeb Speer behind a 3-1 day picked up the silver at 145lbs, picking up three pinfall wins in 1:34, 2:22 and 1:50, but fell in the Championship bout by pinfall. Both Kortin Blevins (195lbs) and Norman Miller (285lbs) each took fifth place finishes home each picking up one win on the day, while Kimble Trainer (170lbs) and Austin Owen (138lbs) placed eighth and ninth respectively in their weight classes and each also register one win on the day. 

Atchison as a team finished 12th at the Tonganoxie Invitational as a fifth place finish by Spencer Vice (138lbs) paced them on the mats; Vice went 3-2 on that mat. Both Andrew Wilson (195lbs) and Riley Smith (220lbs) each finished sixth for the Redmen, while Sercy Duncan (132lbs) picked up an eighth place finish, Gavin Rebant (113lbs) took ninth, Alex Bindel (152lbs) placed 11th and Caleb Pierce (160lbs) finished 12th. 

Both teams head into the holiday and will again hit the mats in January as Doniphan West will host a double dual on Thursday, January 7th, while Atchison will be at the Royal Valley Quad on at Thursday.
