Highland Football Losses Tight Road Contest to Garden City

After starting the season off with an upset of the then eighth ranked team in the country in Dodge City the Scotties hit the road Saturday for their first road trip of the college football season and took on Garden City Community College.

Garden City struck first in the contest on their home field as they found the endzone in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead with over seven minutes left in the first. That lead grew to 13-0 for Garden City with just under four minutes left in the first quarter and the Scotties went into the half down two scores.

Scotties got a break in the third quarter as Steven Delaine blocked a punt and recovered it on the one-yard line. Marquis Terry punched it into the endzone for the one-yard score to make 13-7 after the extra point as Highland drew within one score. Highland in the fourth quarter threatened to tie the game or take the lead multiple times but came up short. Scotties got down to the one-yard line, but a penalty, run for no-gain and incomplete pass ended the threat as Troy product, Tristan Speer who was in a quarterback misfired. Highland had another opportunity late getting into the redzone and faced a fourth and two from the Garden City 11 with 1:28 left but the Broncs stopped Highland and took over on downs ultimately working to the 13-7 win.

Highland was held to just 147 total yards of offense and had three turnovers in the contest.

The loss moves Highland to 1-1 on the season and the Scotties are next in action on Sunday, September 11th on the road taking on Graceland University JV.
