Highland CC Sports Round-Up - Football Falls to Butler, Volleyball See's Win Streak Snapped & XC Competes at Fort Hays State Open

Highland Falls On the Road to Butler

Coming out of the bye week the Highland CC Scotties went on the road to face off with Butler riding a three-game winning streak and ranked #14 in the Nation, but suffered their second loss of the season falling 26-8. 

Butler took the initial lead with a 28-yard field goal with just under four minutes left in the first quarter, but Highland responded with 1:06 left in the first as Marquis Terry ran it in from three-yards out for the Scottie touchdown and with the two-point conversion Highland went up 8-3. The Grizzles however would do the rest of the scoring on the day notching 32 and 28-yard field goals in the second quarter with a 20-yard touchdown pass sandwiched in between to carry a 16-8 lead into halftime. Butler went on to add two more touchdowns in the second and half and kept Highland off the board to give the Scotties their second defeat of the season with a final score of 26-8. 

In the loss Troy Trojan product, Tristan Speer was 11-16 for 104 yards for Highland, while starter Kahlil Render was only 4-11 for 95 yards with two interceptions. Terry registered the lone touchdown for Highland and finished with 68 yards on 20 carries, while Ronnie Jamison caught four passes for 97 yards in the loss. 

The loss sends Highland to 4-2 on the season and 2-2 in conference play. The season continues next Saturday, October 15th at 1:00pm at home for Highland as they host Iowa Western Community College. 

Highland Volleyball Team Has Win Streak Snapped at DMACC Invitational

The Scotties hit the road for tournament play over the weekend carrying a nine-game winning streak to Boone, Iowa headed into the DMACC Invitational but Highland had a tough weekend and went just 1-3 in action seeing their win streak snapped. 

On Friday the Scotties streak their win streak to 10-straight games by beating North Dakota State College of Science 25-19, 17-25, 25-18, 25-18. To finish Friday Highland took on Longview Community College and saw their win streak snapped as they fell in four sets 22-25, 25-17, 22-25, 24-26.

Saturday the Scotties took on Kirkwood Community College and Des Moines Area Community College and played a pair of tough contests falling in four and five sets to each team. Highland took the 25-20, 20-25, 17-25, 15-25 loss to Kirkwood, while taking Des Moines to five sets but fell 7-25, 25-22, 14-25, 25-18, 9-15.

The 1-3 weekend moved Highland to 19-8 on the season overall. The Scotties get back to KJCCC action on Wednesday, October 12th at 5:30pm when they play host to Johnson County Community College. 

Highland Cross Country Competes at Fort Hays State Open

Cross Country season continued for Highland in Hays, Kansas over the weekend as the Scotties competed at the Fort Hays State Open. 

A fifth place team performance for Highland led the Scotties as earned fifth out of 19 teams. A time of 26:00.4 by Jorge Guerrero led Highland placing sixth out of 186 in the men's black race. Jose Jaime and Zekarias Philipo ran to 27th and 33rd place finishes and John Brunner finished 56th. Jordan Adams, Cole Hinton, Brandt Houk and Isaiah Smith grabbed finishes 102nd, 103rd, 110th and 114th, respectively. Also competing for Highland was Jonathan Miller, Tristan Hinton and Jackson Beaver finishing 122nd, 131st and 136th. 

The Highland women finished 14th as a team out of 19 teams competing in the women's black race. Leading the way for the lady Scotties was Lakashia Willis who posted a time of 20:02.4 to finish 48th. Kaitlyn Slagle and Ivanna Uribe notched 68th and 79th place finishes for the Scotties. While, Gisel Santiago, Katie Corrigan and Juliette Rios posted finishes of 120th, 128th and 130th, respectively. Also in action for Highland were Casey Nelson, Bailey Mistler and Holly Whetstine who finished 149th, 150th and 157th. A total of 165 runners were in the women's black race.
