Highland Women's Basketball Opens Season With Win

The Highland lady Scotties basketball team enter the 2016-17 season with some high expections and are preseason ranked #2 in NJCCA Division II rankings and on Tuesday night the Scotties got the season under way with a 126-49 rout of William Penn Junior Varsity. 

Highland worked to a 23-12 lead after the first quarter and led only 49-32 at the half but used an impressive second half to cruise to the win outscoring William Penn 77-17 to cruise to the win. The lady Scotties shot 51.2% from the floor as a team and 43.2% from three with 16 made three-pointers tying a school record. Mariane Carvalho a freshman from Brazil made a huge impact in her Scottie debut pouring in 30 points on 10-16 shooting with four three-pointers and going 6-6 at the chartiy stripe. Returning All-American, Szonja Vukov added a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Blaize Burgess, freshman from Topeka scored 20 points. Four other lady Scotties scored double figures in the win. 

The Scotties continue the basketball season on Friday at 1:00pm in Iola, Kansas against Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College as part of the Allen Community College Tournament. The Highland men tipoff their season on Friday night at 8:00pm at Barton Community College. 

Highland Volleyball Caps the Regular Season With a Win

Tuesday marked the final regular season match of the volleyball season for the lady Scotties and Highland bounced back from a loss in their match against Cowley to top Wentworth Academy in four sets on the road. 

Scotties earned the win 25-19, 25-8, 23-25, 25-15 over the Dragons of Wentworth and improved to 24-13 on the season with the win.
