B&B In Search of 3rd State Title in 5 Years in a Rematch Versus Thunder Ridge
By Mike Smith

Winning has been the name of the game for B&B athletics for years and that especially goes for the football program who has won two state titles in the last four years, while making the state championship all four of those years on top. The Falcons have soared through another season and to their fifth straight state title game having gone 62-2 over the last five years (including this season).

The Falcons are headed back to the state championship and it will be a rematch this season of last year's state championship game against Thunder Ridge that the Longhorns won 46-14. Thunder Ridge capitalized on four B&B turnovers and used a two-headed rushing attack of graduated tailback, Joel Struckoff and senior fullback, Trevor Lowe.

Head coach, Justin Coup in his first season continued the success of the Falcons on the football field but the Falcons went into last year's championship banged up missing five players, including their starting quarterback and one of their starting tailbacks. Coach, Coup won't use that as an excuse but who knows what would have happened if B&B was fully healthy.

Health is not an issue this time around for either team. For the Falcons they have been battled tested from the start of the season facing two-time 8-Man DI champs, Madison in the season opener and winning that game. B&B has used stifling defense and a balanced offense attack to propel themselves back to the state title game. Falcons defense is only giving up 9.8 points per game and has playmakers at every position, forcing turnovers and just dominating, especially the line of scrimmage.

On offense its been balance all season for the Falcons, junior quarterback, Dustin Rottinghaus has lead the way taking over last season in the playoffs the junior has blossomed this season into a primetime playmaker. Rottinghaus has tossed 15 TD's, including three TD passes each in all the playoff games while throwing for 1,212 yards on the season and adding 509 yards rushing and 18 rush TD's. Dustin Deters, this season moved to fullback full-time is close to a 1,000 yard season, with 952 yards and 17 TD's on the year on the ground, bulldozing his way over the competition. To go along with the Dustin & Dustin tandem in the backfield its been a cast of other characters stepping up for the Falcons all season. Juniors, Brandon Bergman and Cameron Haug and Senior, Tyler Deters have all come up big for B&B all season.

For their opponents, Thunder Ridge its a little simpler for them they only returned two starters on each side of the ball and got blasted week one by Rock Hills but things changed after that. The Longhorns have been rolling since week two behind another two-headed running attack this season in senior fullback, Trevor Lowe (1,538 yards & 27 TD's) and sophomore tailback, Trent Rietzke (740 yards & 17 TD's). Lowe is quite familiar with B&B as he bruised through the B&B defense last year in the championship for 159 yards and three scores. Junior quarterback, Garrett Krueger has stepped in to make plays for the Longhorns this season, also.

B&B comes into the a perfect 12-0 on the season riding high on a balanced team in the second year under coach Justin Coup, while Thunder Ridge is 11-1 on the season and looking to defend its state title. This one sets up to be a classic rematch with multiple new playmakers this time for each team. The Falcons are looking to cap off another great season with a state title.

Game kicks off at 11:00am Saturday in Newton at Fischer Field; broadcast starts at 10:30am with pregame on 92.1 KMZA and online here at www.mscsports.net (click here to listen).
