Highland Volleyball Improves to 2-0 in Conference With Tough Five Set Win Over KCKCC

After a 3-1 performance at the McCook tournament over the weekend the Highland Scotties volleyball team rolled back into Conference play and traveled to KCK to take on the Blue Devils. 

Scotties started the night strong taking the first two sets 25-18 and 25-20 and looked prime for another Conference win but KCK made it interesting fighting back to force a five set as the Blue Devils won set three and four 11-25 and 17-25. The fifth set was snagged by the Scotties to earn the win 15-5. 

Set one saw the Scotties work up a five-point lead early leading 8-3 which led to a KCKCC timeout and Highland utilized that five-point cushion to keep the Blue Devils at bay throughout the first set and earned the set 25-18. Offense was balanced for the Scotties with five different gals with a kill in the first set as Zealia Kleitz led the way with four kills, while Katie Pearson record 12 set assists and seven different gals had a dig with seven each for Leslie Polanco and Kirsten Johnson leading the way. 

Scotties were locked in a tighter battle in set two as it was tied several times midway through the set and KCKCC even led 14-12 but a 4-0 Highland run gave them the lead back and they kept it taking the set 25-20. Polanco had six kills fot the Scotties in the set, while Sydney Prine registered seven digs. 

KCKCC jumped out early in set three going up 5-1 leading to an early Highland timeout and the Scotties tired to overcome the early defiect but fell short of battling back as the Blue Devils won set three 11-25 and the used a 9-0 to start set four to take it also 17-25. 

Headed to a five and deciding set the Scotties came out firing going up 6-0 before KCKCC got on the board but the Blue Devils answered with a 5-0 run of their own out of their second timeout in the set. The Scotties not rattled capped the fifth set with a 9-0 run taking it 15-5 to win the match. 

On the night Polanco finished with a double-double with 16 kills and 27 digs, while two other gals recorded double digits kills a Kleitz and Koie Orozco each had 10 kills and added nine and seven digs to their night. Johnson finished the night with 20 digs, while Prine had a new career high in digs and kills with 12 and five, respectively. Katie Pearson had her 11th match of the season with 30-plus assists as she finished with 39. 

The win moves Highland to 2-0 in KJCCC play and 12-3 overall on the season; the season continues on Friday at the Iowa Central Triangular facing the Tritons and Grand View University JV.
