The Hiawatha Lady Red Hawks delivered another historic shooting performance Tuesday night, pulling away in the second half to defeat Sabetha 56-33. It was a near repeat of their 67-24 win in December and marked Hiawatha’s 18th victory of the season heading into a pivotal night at the Roundhouse.

The game opened back-and-forth, with Sabetha attacking inside. Laura Lierz sparked the Red Hawks with back-to-back three-pointers — the second with seven seconds left in the first quarter — giving Hiawatha a 14-12 lead.

From there, Hiawatha’s defense took over. The Red Hawks outscored Sabetha 17-6 in the second quarter for a 31-18 halftime lead, then used a 21-9 third-quarter run to put the game away. They led 52-27 entering the fourth.

Kylie Nelson headlined the night with a record-breaking performance, knocking down eight three-pointers to surpass Clara Lindstrom’s 2022 school record of seven. Nelson finished with 32 points, five steals, and three assists. Kenzie Nelson added 14 rebounds, while Adison Williams scored nine points. Lierz totaled six points, five rebounds, and four assists, and Michaela Williams contributed seven steals as part of a 12 three-pointer, six-turnover team effort.

Sabetha was led by Keira Keim with 12 points, but 17 turnovers against Hiawatha’s press proved costly.

Sabetha (3-17, 1-9) hosts Holton on Friday, while Hiawatha (18-2, 8-1) now turns its attention to “Championship Thursday,” as both Red Hawk teams face Silver Lake for Big East League titles.
