State wrestling season has officially arrived. The girls’ state tournament wrapped up on Wednesday, and the boys will take the mat beginning Thursday. For two Falls City students, this year’s event brings a rare and meaningful opportunity to create a friendship and represent a community culture of inclusion.
“Beyond The Mat” is a high school wrestling initiative designed to develop the whole student athlete—not just their competitive skills. The program pairs students with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team, promoting inclusion, teamwork, and mutual respect. Its mission centers on breaking down barriers, building friendships, and fostering a school culture where every student feels they belong.
This year, Falls City Public Schools is honored to represent Class C in the “Beyond The Mat” exhibition. Wesley Vitale will take the mat opposite Mason Collier on Friday, February 20, prior to the boys’ semifinal rounds. Their match is about far more than wins or losses—it’s about connection, confidence, and the spirit of community the event strives to celebrate. It’s an opportunity few receive, and one that reflects proudly on Falls City.
Also participating in this year’s “Beyond The Mat” showcase are representatives from Omaha South (Class A) and Wauneta Palisade (Class D). You can catch Wesley and Mason’s match in Omaha on Friday around 6:00 PM.
