The Axtell boy’s basketball team posted a memorable season with a 4th place finish at the 1A-II State Tournament this past weekend in Great Bend.

Brandon Schmelzle closed out his sophomore season on the hardwood with solid performances in the tournament.

The Eagles beat Bucklin in the first round but lost to Lebo in the Semi-Finals and South Central in the third-place game.

Brandon was the only player for Axtell who scored in double figures in all three games of the tournament, He scored 11 against Bucklin, 13 against Lebo, and 10 against South Central.

Brandon averaged over 12 points, six rebounds and three assists per game as Axtell finished with a record of 20-6. Brandon was also recently named First Team All-League in the Twin Valley League along with being a major part of the back-to-back 8-Man State Championships for the Eagles football team.
