Axtell, Centralia, Wetmore, Valley Heights Battle in Valley Heights Track Meet

It was a Twin Valley League flavor in the Valley Heights Invitational on Thursday with the Mustangs hosting fellow TVL teams Centralia, Axtell and Wetmore, alongside one other team in Basehor-Linwood for battle on the track.

Going home with the team crowns for both the boys and girls was the lone non-TVL team in Basehor-Linwood, but the TVL teams highlighted the individual first place finishes on the days action.

In the girls competition, Basehor-Linwood took home first with 183 total points, while Axtell finished second with 125 and Centralia was right behind the Eagles in third with 123 points. Valley Heights and Wetmore took home fourth and fifth with 91 and 48 points, respectively.

For the boys it was Basehor-Linwood amassing 187.5 total points to grab first place, while the host school Valley Heights took second with 137.5 points. Centralia boys followed Valley Heights in a close third place finish with 136 points, while Axtell took tallied 117.5 for fourth and Wetmore finished fifth with 11 points.

Highlighting things for the girls competitions was a host school player of Valley Heights in Brandi Roepke as she took home four first place finishes. Roepke won three of her four golds on the track notching wins in the 100 meters (12.56), 200 meters (26.46) and 400 meter dash (59.56), while her other win came in the long jump after a leap of 17-01.75. Brandi's teammate, Sidney Blackburn also took home a first place finish by winning the shot put with a toss of 34-04.5.

The lady Panthers of Centralia took home four first place finishes two on the track and two in the field events. Mayda Stallbaumer continued her great year this time winning the 800 meter run with a time of 2:35.06, while the team of Blair Burdiek, Kennedy Korpi, Julia Klute and Stallbaumer took home the 4x800 meter relay title (10:50.46). Tara Bergmann and Liz Hasenkamp won the field event crowns for the Panthers, winning the discus and javelin throws with tosses of 100-00 and 106-07, respectively.

Audrey Schmitz lead the lady Eagles on the day capturing both the 1600 and 3200 meter run crowns behind times of 5:44.66 and 12:27.46, respectively; grabbing the 3200 meter crown by nearly 50 seconds. Schmitz, Eagle teammate Brite Brinkmann took home a first place finish, also winning the high jump title (4-07).

Dana Kramer of Wetmore continued here great year, as she had the second best individual performance on the girls side winning three events. Dana made it a sweep in the hurdles winning the 100 and 300 meter hurdles with times of 16.33 and 51.43, respectively, while capturing the triple jump title as her other gold medal on the day behind a leap of 33-02.25.

On the boys side of competition it was yet again a Valley Heights Mustang highlighting things with Elijah Smith winning four golds, two on the track and two in the field. Smith took home wins in the 200 meter dash (23.32) and 110 meter hurdles (14.74), while leaping to wins in the long jump (22-08.5) and triple jump (45-10).

While, Smith took home four event titles, Centralia Panther, Lukas Koch won three events on the day. Koch took home the 400 meter dash (56.50), 800 meter run (2:00.90) and 3200 meter run (10:15.06) crowns with his best win in the 3200, winning that race by nearly a minute. Lukas was joined by three other teammates on the medal stand for gold medals for the Panthers. JT Rosine and Cody Huerter each took home a field event title winning the high jump (6-00) and pole vault (12-00), respectively. Brett Burdiek took home the other first place finish winning the 300 meter hurdles (44.43).

The Axtell Eagles took home three first place finishes in the boys competition on the day lead by their relay teams who won the 4x400 and 4x800 meter relays. The team of Zach Heinen, Shane Torrey, Shane Talbot and Tyler Jones ran to the time of 3:49.58 to win the 4x400, while Torrey and Heinen partnered with Tracy Schmitz and Christian Buessing to win the 4x800 with a time of 9:07.22. While, Aaron Schmelzle took home the javelin title behind a toss of 156-10, winning the event by over 19 feet.

In what was a showcase for some TVL teams each team had their bright moments on Thursday at the Valley Heights Invitational.
