Ten Kansas Area Athletes Punch Tickets to State in Boys Tennis

As the school year starts to come to a close Regionals and State tournament time is upon us and 10 area boys tennis athletes punched their tickets to the state competition coming up this Friday and Saturday.

In Class 4A only Atchison of the area schools fields a boys tennis team and this year will be sending a singles competitor and a doubles team to state this year, after a pair of top six finishes by those athletes. Derrick Contreras put forth the best performance for the Redman in the singles competition at the Topeka-Hayden 4A Regional going 2-1 in three matches and placing fourth. The Redmen doubles team of Wade Gassman and Spencer Walker took home a fifth place finish after going 3-1 on the day, responding with a pair of wins after losing their second match on the days competition.

The three Redmen punched their tickets to state with their performances and helped Atchison finished tied with Ottawa for third as a team in the Topeka-Hayden Regional.

Class 3-2-1A Regional hosted by Bishop Seabury in Lawrence say three singles players and two doubles teams earn spots in the state tournament this coming weekend, after finishing in the top six.

In the singles competition the top area performances were lead by Evan Wheeler of Maur Hill-Mount Academy who took home a third place finish on the day after topping Tanner Wright of Marysville who took home fourth place. Immaculata's, Sam Rhee registered a fifth place finish winning his final match of the day.

Immaculata and Marysville earned another bid to the state tournament with a doubles team grabbing a top six finish. For the Raiders it was James Cha and Phillip Hernandez finishing off a solid day with a second place finish in doubles action, while the Bulldog tandem of Garrison Wright and Joe McNish took home fifth place finish.

State tournament action starts up Friday and continues Saturday for the 10 area athletes headed to state with Class 4A competing in Wichita and Class 3-2-1A competing in Hillsboro.
