TVL Teams Compete Against Each Other at Washington County Track Invite

In the week of the league track meets seven Twin Valley League teams and a pair of other teams faced off against each on track and field competition as part of the Washington County Invitational.

On the day it was the Centralia Panther boys and Washington County girls coming out as the top team of the day winning the Washington County Invite.

On the boys side of competition Centralia posted 118 pointsm, lead by five first place finishes, while Axtell took home a second place finish with 108 points, tallying a pair of first place finsishes. Valley Heights and Clifton-Clyde duked it out for third and fourth with the Mustangs scoring a half point better than the Eagles to grab third and give Clifton-Clyde fourth. Host, Washington County finished fifth, followed by Linn in sixth, Hanover grabbed seventh and Thunder Ridge and Pike Valley finished eighth and ninth.

Washington County lead the way in the girls competition scoring 129 points behind five first place finishes, while Linn was the only other girls team with 100-plus points, scoring 111 points good for second place. Axtell and Centralia had a close battle for third and fourth finishing with five points of each other with the Eagles grabbing third and the Panthers finishing fourth. Valley Heights took home fifth, while Hanover followed in sixth, Clifton-Clyde took seventh and Thunder Ridge placed eighth.

In the boys competition the day was highlighted by Elijah Smith of Valley Heights, Axtell's Relay teams and Lukas Koch of Centralia.

Smith lead Valley Heights with the only first place finishes for the Mustangs on the day in the boys competition, as he registered four first place finishes. Mustang sophomore split the four gold's between the track and field competitions, winning the 100 meter dash, 110 meter hurdles, long jump and triple jump. Smith sprinted to a win in the 100 meter dash (11.40) and tallied the win in the 110 meter hurdles behind a time of 14.71. His leaps of 43-01.50 and 21-03.75, respectively won Smith the triple jump and long jump titles.

For the Eagles of Axtell they continued to find success in the relay competitions this time winning the 4x100 and 4x800 meter relays. The team of Dylan Heiman, Taylor Platt, Shane Talbot and Payton Heinen sprinted to the win in the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 45.15. While, their teammates Christian Buessing, Zach Heinen, Shane Torrey and Tracy Schmitz paced their way to a win in the 4x800 meter relay (8:45.43).

The Centralia Panthers day was lead by another great performance from senior, Lukas Koch who continues to dominate winning the 400 meter dash (51.47), 800 meter run (2:04.99)) and 1600 meter run (4:20.95). His Panther teammates, JT Rosine and Cody Huerter also each registered a first place finish to help the Panthers take first as a team. Rosine leapt his way to a win in the high jump (6-00) while Huerter vaulted to the win in the pole vault (12-06).

Host school, Washington County took home a trio of gold medals with Dylan Hodgson, Brett Herrs and Calvin Porternier each winning an event. Hodgson paced himself to a win in the 3200 meter run behind a time of 10:31.32, while Herrs and Porternier each tossed their way to wins in the shot put (48-01.50) and discus (133-07), respectively.

Clifton-Clyde, also took home a pair of first place finishes with William Ohlde winning the 300 meter hurdles (40.68) and the Eagles 4x400 meter relay of Colin Sikes, Cortney VanCampen, Alex Deaver and Ohlde grabbing the win behind a time of 3:37.94.

Linn Bulldog, Kurt Van der merwe took home a gold for the Bulldogs as he registered the fastest time in the 200 meter dash (22.89).

In the girls competition it was a single competitor from Valley Heights highlighting things just like the boys competition as Brandi Roepke won four events. Roepke sprinted to wins in the 100 (12.84), 200 (26.65) and 400 meter (58.59) dashes, while leaping to a win in the long jump (16-06).

While, Roepke registered four golds, the first place girls team Washington County tallied five total on the day with four coming in the field events. Erin Alexander lead the Tigers on the day tossing her way to wins in the shot put (38-10.25) and discus (115-11.50). Heidi Stegman and Jasmine Helms joined Alexander with wins in field events, taking gold in the pole vault (9-06) and triple jump (33-10.50). Gabryelle Gilliam won the other gold medal for Washington County by taking the win in the 100 meter hurdles (17.21).

Linn Bulldogs took home four golds as the the they won the 4x100 and 4x800 meter relays with times of 51.90 and 4:14.91 with Rachel Bott, Kendra Bargman and Kesiah Thalman on both teams and Acacia Thalman rounding out the 4x100 team and Nicole Ohlde on the 4x800 team and had wins in the 1600 meter run and high jump. Ohlde took home the 1600 meter run (5:33.52) title, while Acacia Thalman won the high jump (5-02).

Hanover Wildcats, also took home multiple first place finishers with Courtney Jueneman winning the 800 meter run (2:26.52) and the Wildcats 4x800 meter relay team of Morganne Zabokrtsky, Claire Bruna, Tiffany Bruna and Jenna Jueneman winning that event with a time of 10:20.92.

Centralia, Axtell and Clifton-Clyde each took home one first place finish on the day's competition at Washington. For the Panthers it was Riley Hanzlik grabbing a first place in the javelin throw (116-07) and for the Eagles it was Audrey Schmitz winning the 3200 meter run (12:04.53). While for Clifton-Clyde Elizabeth Norbert grabbed a first place finish in the 300 meter hurdles (49.05).

All the TVL teams now turn their attention to the league meet coming up Thursday back at Washington County.
